HELP! (Google Maps edition)
« on: August 25, 2021, 10:22:16 PM »
My computer is driving me nuts. I hope someone can help.

On my home computer, when I go to Google maps (not Google Earth -- Google maps as in www.google.com/maps) I have been able to toggle between a 2D and a (pseudo) 3D view, as well as use a compass to rotate the satellite view around to different orientations. When I call up Google Maps on my computer at work, I don't have that.

Well, now I don't have it at home. Right in the middle of a session, it stopped working and I have no idea what I might have done to switch it off. How can I get it back?

Have you tried turning it off and back on?

Win7 for me,  I do a routine "create a restore  point" every weekend.

I have nonticed numerous, no innumerable, times that something on windows quits operating the same way as it did ten minutes ago.

So I go to System Restore, run it, and most of the time it cures the problem.

I suspicioned several times that full shutdowns and startups allow MS to sneak in and work their diabolism at those times in the operating life of a computer: shut down or restart.

So 99% of the time I only hibernate.

I also took my battery out of my laptop and whenever anything majorly out of the ordinary occurs, I yank the power plug, and f8 restart and figure out what to do then.

I also noticed from when I used to allow updates, I had the strange notion that whatever they "fixed" screwed up something else...

Way to go for job security, eh?

And I'll never forgive them for  trying to guess what I want to highlight for copying or whatever.  Eff them.  Just friggin' highlight from where I pressed the button to where I let go of it, and that's that and don't try to guess whether I wanted to include that exclamation point in the operation.  G-d, that's annoying.

I know it sounds oldfartparanoid, but that's how I run.

Have you tried detriangulating the flux capacitor array and rerouting the ion packets through the dilithium matrix?

No, that is a globe.  Streat View would be more like this.   =)

That's not street view. In Google maps street view is when you zoom in far enough to switch to images taken from their roving camera cars. That still works.

I'm talking about in satellite view. Down in the lower right corner of the screen where the '+' and '-' zoom icons are there used to be additional icons -- one was a compass, that was interactive to rotate the orientation, and another was a toggle between 2D and 3D view modes.

I did try that. I received a Frangetometer Calibration error message.

They may have taken that out of the Windows web version.

I can still access 3D maps on chrome on my phone, and a two finger swipe will "flatten" the view and bring up the compass, but the whole 3D layer is missing on windows.  There's a "Globe View" toggle that claims to be for "zooming and viewing the world in 3D", but it doesn't seem to be active on my work desktop yet.  It may be that they moved the functionality there, but it isn't quite live yet.

Just checked my MS Surface running Win10 using Brave browser.  Googly Maps does not have the compass or 2D/3D.

My Ipad Maps app has those two features.

It's called "globe view" now. From Dogmush's post above, it may not have been pushed out to everyone yet. Both maps and Earth have had recent updates that changed their functionality.

Even more curious -- the "old" 3D view doesn't work on my desktop (Windows 10) computer with my default browser (Waterfox Classic), or with Pale Moon or with IE, but it does work with Firefox. In Waterfox, when I activate the options box the check box for Globe View is grayed out.

Not a happy camper.

I had all sorts of problems whenever MS would decide it wanted to "upgrade" something.  They even snuck W 10 onto two of my devices one in the middle of the night, and the other when I was letting it do a routine update.  I paid to get it off one device and learned enough to get it off the other.  I run 8.1 which is plenty considering how little I know about computers.  After I caught them doing other stuff, I turned off the automatic updates and only do occasional Defender updates, I haven't had an issue.  Prior to that I was doing system restore far too often to undo what damage they had done.

In fairness to Microsoft, in this instance the problem doesn't appear to have been caused my Microsoft. It seems that Google has "improved" Google Maps -- by making the better, higher resolutions and 3D views inaccessible to a large number of users.

I may have to reinstall Google Earth.

I just checked and the 2D/3D and rotation functions are only available when in the satellite view.  (Windows 10 64bit Version 20H2)

Correct.

For me, those options were in satellite view. Now they are gone (except in Firefox).

When I go to Satellite image, I get the option for 3D and the compass (rotation) mode.  It pops up in the lower right corner.  Still running Brave browser.

No, because -- as I mentioned -- for me the "globe view" option is grayed out. I can't select it.

I just reread your earlier post. You say it works in Firefox still? But not in waterfox, pale moon, or IE?

If so, the likely explanation is that those off the wall (and in IE's case dead), browsers are no longer supported by Google, or else the first two have not had updates that include the new functionality. IE should no longer be used by anybody ever.
