Informal poll - pics in taglines?
« on: April 03, 2007, 09:40:35 AM »
Just a quick thread to see how the forum members feel about pics in signature lines.  Not the monsters that you see some places, but maybe something small and tasteful - wife/husband, kids, trip pics (like below), or something personally significant.

How feeleth y'all?

Brad

This thread is worthless without pics? Smiley

They don't bother me since I can turn off such things if they get excessive.

Personally I dislike them and feel it detracts from the forum.  Makes things hard and annoying to read, too.

I can see why some like them, though I personally don't.  Call me Old School, but I feel that sigs should be text only and to the point.  Avatars is the place for pics.

I don't like 'em, but I won't ask anyone to get rid of theirs either.

Just another waste of bandwidth to me. I feel bad for folks on dial-up who have to wade through it.

Most sig pics add nothing.  I would suggest a link to the pic, instead, to keep the bandwidth use down.

I'm cool with avatars and photos in the message.

I personally think photos in the sig line get mondane and distracting, but that is my personal opinion.

No personal preference either way.

Well, not quite. I dislike the ~600x400 pixel monstrosities in sig lines you see on some fora.

But what Brad Johnson has I don't mind.

I don't mind SMALL images...banners make it hard to read and really slow down loading.

I'll parrot most others , small is fine , one nice thing about this software is it automatically adds a horizontal rule before the sig area which allows your brain to "auto skip" to the next message when you're speed reading to catch up. I like to leave sigs turned on , gives you a little insight into folks.

Reading a forum with Eve software (like S&W forum) is maddening because so many people run their message right into their sig you end up reading sigs all too often.

Violently opposed to them.  I get very annoyed when someone's sig is routinely bigger/longer than their post and is nothing but a list of guns they own or a picture of something that's only moderately funny or whatever.

I'll admit some people abuse even text only sigs (a la THR) by having a sig that is half a page long.  But it is much easier to do that with pictures than it is with text.  And, as mentioned, pictures suck for people with dial-up (or Iraq-o-net, like me).

Down with picture taglines!!!

I just figured out why I hate them.

My screen size is a given size, and I can only see a given amount of text in the window at once.  The reason I read forums is to read what people have to say, not what their sig says (especially over and over).

Let's say R is readble stuff on a forum.

So if C is actual content and text and S is sigs, and P is the size of the pic in the sig, the "signal to noise ratio" in a given page is R=C-S(P).   P really compounds the problem, and makes the space available for comment much smaller.  Take out pictures, and R=C-S, which is better, and more readable.

Basically, the more sig and pix there is, the more I have to click the scroll down button to read the same amount of info.

There will be a test at the end of the week.  cheesy
