Stupid Oil Filters
« on: March 27, 2022, 05:48:26 PM »
So I did an oil change on my tractor Friday and was just sitting down to order a new filter (I like to have them on hand in advance) for next time. They have stopped making mine and replaced it with another OEM filter (LS Tractor).

This would be no big deal, except  I barely have room to get the filter wrench on the very end of the current filter. The replacement filter is shorter and fatter. I'm sure I'll be able to get it on, but I have no idea how I'm going to be able to grab it with any leverage when it's time to change it. I'm going to need to look for some different kind of filter wrench or just resign myself to having to stab that one with a screwdriver or something to get it off. It would be nice if it would have had a nut on the end so I could wrench it off, like my UTV filter has.

I just don't see the logic in changing the dimensions on the  new one. It appears to end up being the same volume. Oh well - first world problems.

Can you get to it with anything else? Giant channellocks have always been a hit around here.

I was kind of thinking that route. Length of the handles might be a problem. Maybe I can get a cheap HF set and saw the handles shorter. I'll have to see when the time comes in another 100 hours. I just know it's going to be a problem based on barely being able to get to the longer, skinnier one.

A vice grip style chain wrench might work, depending on your clearances.

Actually my first choice, and I was gonna use my chain wrench on the current filter because it was on pretty good this time, but there was no room for the chain, so it definitely won't work with the fatter filter.

Strap wrench. Thinner than a chain.

Strap wrench.  I've got one that the strap is perpendicular to a 3/4" ID square tubing. Works pretty good for hard to reach filters.

Please to be explaining the perpendicular. I have s strap wrench, but it's configured like a regular old filter wrench.

Those spider wrenches can be the tits on some applications. My parent's had... IIRC, a Ford Expedition with a buried oil filter and it was an SOB to get at. Spider wrench was a big help.

That could work. I've never seen one before. Is that what Mike is calling a "spider wrench"? Are they some kind of "one size fits all" thing? Depending on how thick it is, that could be the bee's knees.

The rape van link I posted a few up is a link to one of Snappy's spider wrenches. Lisle makes a knockoff... They tighten as  you loosen. Text me the info.

It's for an LS XG3135H (or the XR3135H is more often listed but the same engine). The LS original filter part # is 40318591. The "replaced by" part # is 40409065

40318591 filter:

Oh, got it. I'm getting one of those regardless. I've got a few filters where that's gonna be WAY easier. I'll check an O'Reilly's the next time I'm in the city. Thanks!

It's a cup wrench.  Not a one size fits all, I think there are three or four standard sizes.

I used to have a Chevy S-10 with a 3.8 V-6 that the filter horrible to get at. I ended up getting a Lisle branded oil filer wrench like this one to get at it. I don't think Lisle makes them any more but other brands do.

A spider wrench is adjustable. (self adjusting)  The one in that pic is for a specific diameter filter, and you should be able to use an open-end wrench to turn it if there's not enough room for a ratchet.  Either type ought to work, it just depends how much room you don't have.

If it's going to be an ongoing PITA, might consider a filter relocation kit. Get the filter out to more accessible location.

Cheaper to develop enough of a leak so that you never change oil. Sounds rednecky so let’s call it open system filtration. :D

Picked that up. It is going to do the trick. Just barely with the new model filter, but I would have been up *expletive deleted*it creek otherwise.
