Cheesy 80s sci-fi in 4K goodness
« on: September 09, 2022, 11:20:57 AM »
I lurvs me some cheesy 80's sci-fi. Time Rider, My Science Project, Last Starfighter, etc. Good to see some of them, mostly those which have become cult classics, getting the 4K love.

I have the They Live disc. It's impressively good on a technical level, looking and sounding far better than I figured it ever would, or even could.

The Directors cut* (2001) of Star Trek TMP got remastered and the many of the effects reworked from the original negatives to true 4k. They actually spent $millions on it. Was just released on Sept 6th. Awaiting my backordered Blue-Ray discs from amazon and they're saying Oct 1st for shipping. The bit and pieces you see on YT** are gorgeous.

*This was the version where the director (Robert Wise) went back and actually finished the film with a reedit  to tighten it up and finished and often reworked effects. The original release (1979) was a rushed unfinished mess and it showed. Wise always said it still needed work.

** Many of the supposed 4k videos on YT are not the remastered version despite what the title may say.

Edit: Not showing a price at the moment but it was $26

Edit Edit: Scratch the Oct 1. E-mail says they shipped it and will be here tomorrow.

The Digital Bits reviewer Bill Hunt has already given the disc a spin. He says it's worth every penny.

A lot of these are on Netflix or Amazon Prime - and they know that they're fairly popular, so... They're never in the "you already paid for this" (not free) stuff.

Yeah I've got the Dir's Ed. (2001) on DVD and it's quite an improvement over the 1979 Ed. as is. Every review I've seen says the Remastered Dir's Ed. takes it to a whole new level.

Just noticed the price went from $26 (what I paid for a pre order) to $42. Yikes!

BTW: And I don't even have a 4k TV or monitor :old:

Got my eye on a 32" 4k monitor at Sam's.

I have this 4K Star Trek set of the 1st 4 movies.  Not sure if the other link is better.

That appears to be the 1979 ver upscaled to 4k
The link I posted is to the Remastered Director's Ed version which was only just released a few days ago.

Probably not a complete list
1979 Theatrical release
Extended TV ver. Contained a lot of unfinished effects.  [barf]
2001 Director's Ed. Reedited and finished effects. Only came out on DVD as far as I know
Release date? 1979 Theatrical release Upscaled to 4k
2022 Remastered Director's Ed remastered from the original negatives to 4k (The one I just bought)

So to confuse matters there are now two 4k versions, original and Remastered Director's Ed.

Well poop
Got the discs and the main movie disc is unrecognized by both the computer's and the TV's bluray drives. Checked specs on both and even updated the firmware on the computer's drive and it should be okay but nope, no disc in drive.
The bonus disc plays though which tells me the drives are okay. Reported it defective to amazon and boxing it back up.

Silly question, but your players are 4K capable, right?

Funny you should mention that, I just got a copy of Time Rider.  I was surprised the price was low, but it turned out to be a bootleg copy.  It played, but the menus were not right.  Not the greatest film but I enjoyed seeing it 40 or so years after the first time.
