Dodged a bullet, well actually tornadoes
« on: April 02, 2023, 01:39:59 PM »
Friday eve my wife’s brother and his wife were overnighting on a trip from Nashville to Minneapolis.
Great folks I really like them and of her several siblings they are our favorites.
I suggested we get creative and put 3 vehicles in our 2 1/2 car garage but BIL opted for my HF moving blankets instead. Quarter size hail no problemo.
Wife fixed a really nice dinner and we opened a very good wine when all our cell phones were blaring weather emergencies. We are kind of tucked into a wooded valley so decided to sit in dining room while watching with one eye out the bay window.
Multiple tornadoes and severe high winds etc. hit 1/2 mile south of us and 1/2 mile east of us and 3 miles west of us. 1/2 mile wide tornado belted through 4 miles south of us. Damage all around us. Power lines down 1 mile south of us. We never lost power until they repaired/replaced poles yesterday for 3 hours.
My burn barrel blew off into the timber. A garden cart was up against the woodshed. BILs car was fine. New steel roof is good, noisy during awesome hail but no damage anywhere here..
Dinner was good. We lit candles and had a fire in the fireplace and watched hell unleashed around and over us. Maybe we should have taken our plates to the basement but feeling pretty lucky.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

Glad the really bad stuff missed you.

. . . Maybe we should have taken our plates to the basement but feeling pretty lucky.

VERY few homes here in central Texas even have basements. Violent storms make me miss the basements in my previous homes in the Midwest. If I were building from scratch, I'd have at least one "safe room"with well-anchored reinforced concrete walls and ceiling as well as extremely robust doors.
Trump won in 2016. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.

Glad you lucked out.

So far in SW Ohio I’ve only been sent to the basement once this year.  Had a small tornado drop in about 25 m NE of us over the weekend.  Have a feeling it’s gonna be an exciting spring…..

Yep. They are forecasting the whole show, baseball size hail, 80mph winds, heavy rain, and tornadoes in about 3 hours.
We’re jus gonna hunker down at home and maybe go to the basement this time if indicated.

Good luck Kingcreek.  Keep safe.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Weather tracker I watch. He has a really good ability to read the weather.
He's live right now

Meh, that'll polish out.

Changed direction and went south of us last night. We just had some high winds but no problems.
Even with all the hassle I had, I’m pretty happy with the new steel roof. It is more secure than asphalt shingles.
I have a couple more trees to take down then won’t have to worry about any coming down on the house.

Our weather alerts were blaring before 5am.. I turned of the security system and stuck my head out the back door- dead calm- not a whisper of air movement.

THIS time we went to the basement!

Tornado was overhead at 5:15 but not on the ground here. 1” hail and hellish lightning rode in on 60+mph winds. 30 minutes later just light rain.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

Looking at NOAA and as of right now, 9:15am on 04/05/2023, NOAA SPC has Tornado Watch boxes in an almost solid string from Texarkana to Detroit. What little that isn't under a Tornado Watch, far eastern Illinois, is covered by a Severe Thunderstorm watch which chatter infers will turn to a TW soon.

Y'all stay safe out there.

Had a pretty significant line moving towards us last night.  It broke up a bit and passed us by with barely anything - almost no rain even.

I need to clean the gutters.

Also have a monster silver maple that I suspect will eventually murder me in my sleep if I don't get to it first.

We had some heavy rain over night last night.  This AM we had a few fronts move through at about 55-60 mph that dropped a lot of rain.  No hail, no tornadoes and the rain was not excessive to cause any problem.  Wind was fierce off and on like the rain. No power losses for us or nearby.  Grand River is at flood stage but that's pretty normal for this time of year.
