Innovation: Giving Old Stuff a Facelift
« on: April 15, 2023, 10:16:34 AM »
A couple of years ago, Winchester introduced the 350 Legend, a straight wall case designed to meet the rules some states have about what cartridges can be used to hunt deer. And of course, it is suitable for the basic AR platform. This was touted as being very "innovative" but right away I thought that Winchester simply "magnumized" their old 351 WSL round, which was used in their Model 1907 self loading rifle. The new round - with a longer case loaded to higher pressures - is otherwise similar to the old round, give or take a few thousandths of an inch here and there.

As soon as I read the announcement of the 350 Legend, I found myself thinking "When is Winchester going to be INNOVATIVE and magnumize their old 401 WSL round, introduced in their Model 1910 rifle?"

Now we know.

And the .351 was itself a magnumized version of one of the most useless cartridges of all time, the .35 WSL.

So I can expect an AR in my beloved 9.3x72 any day now right?

I'm so contrarian that I didn't respond to the thread.

More likely Winchester's brilliant innovators will do something completely out of the box like magnumizing the 30 Super Carry. Let's see . . . lengthen the case to 1.29" and standardize on a 110 grain .308" bullet. Probably could make it work in a lightweight, compact carbine-type shoulder arm. I bet standard powders will let them get close to 2000 ft/sec out of an 18" barrel.

A friend at work who is an experienced hunter bought a .350 Legend a couple years ago but he says the terminal performance isn’t great leading to long tracks and lost deer. He says his .243 is a better deer dropper.

I've taken a couple of deer with a .357 revolver - no problem. Even though I'm not a big fan of the .350 Legend for a rifle, it still hits harder than anything out of a 5" M-27, so I'd say long tracks and lost deer are a matter of shot placement.

I thought this would be a thread about "80 For Brady".
