Aurora Borealis 23-24APR Visible as Far South as Kansas
« on: April 23, 2023, 07:23:41 PM »
There is apparently a massive (G4 Severe) solar storm impacting Earth today and tomorrow. Predictions are for visible Aurora Borealis potentially as far South as Kansas. They originally predicted it as minor-moderate, but it apparently went way more explodey all of a sudden.

It's been raining here and is just now clearing out. Hopefully it will be cloud free by viewing time. I've seen them here before with NODs, which amplify the light, but never with my naked eye.

When I lived in Minnesota, I saw the auroras about 3 times in 17 years - and each time it was a surprise, with meteorologists talking about it afterwards.

The few times they predicted auroras and we had clear skies - nothing.

When I lived in Minnesota,

I was in northern MN during deer season 2004. We were getting ready for dinner when one of the guys came in and dragged everyone outside. We spent the rest of the night watching the Aurora from horizon to horizon.

A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.
Is defenestration possible through the overton window?

Stayed cloudy all night. Which sucks, because I saw images from non-cloudy parts of the state near my magnetic latitude that looked pretty cool. I was out at 0400 when there was partial clearing, but it was already too late for naked eye viewing. I saw a little bit with the NODs, but monochromatic viewing is not as cool as color viewing.

Not to drift the thread too much . . . but my home is in the path of totality for the April 8 2024 total solar eclipse.

Most of THIS April has been cloudy.

 =(

Hope next year it's clear.

Saw the aurora once with my nekkid eyeballs in the 1970s from Boulder CO (40° N) but I was pretty dark adapted.  I was thrilled by the fact I saw it at all, but it wasn't real spectacular at that latitude.  I watched it long enough that I could see it shift around a little.  Memorable, of course, but not worth bragging about... ummm... which I'm doing now anyway...

Rats.
