Handgun lock boxes (vehicle etc)
« on: May 02, 2023, 05:11:53 PM »
I very much prefer to have my handgun in a holster on my hip. But living in Illinois with many restricted places and planning to do more traveling next year, I started looking at options. I had a cheap locking case that didn’t impress me. I once had it mounted in our Cadillac SRX but took it out when we bought the fusion.
I was in the local farm store and saw a surprise sale on Hornady Alpha lock cases for $36. Much heavier and better built with a barrel key and its TSA approved. Bought one on impulse and will probably cable it in the fusion until the new ride come in. Hopefully I can find a good location to mount it securely then. I’m thinking about another one for the Jeep but it gets used differently and might not be needed the same way.
Anybody else use a vehicle box?

Yes, I have one from Liberty that I got back in 2019.

An earlier version of this one, I think.

I got it for when I was working on the FBI contract. I couldn't carry in the building, obviously, but because the building wasn't government property (leased office space) I could keep a gun in the car. Worked fine. Still have it in the car tucked under the seat but I don't use it much these days.

I can't carry to my current work place because it's an AT&T facility, including the parking lots.

I have 3, for various vehicles.  2 cheapos from Walmart with combination lock.

The third, the same thing with key lock from somebody else.  I don't remember the manufacturer but I see it in gun shops.  It'll come to me eventually. Gun Vault.

I have just a basic lock box (Gun Vault) with an analog cam log. I don't carry keys as a rule. They also work for TSA. I use them inside a hard sided suitcase and have had no issues when flying. I like the analog combo (3 number) because I can set it to open on 2 numbers and only have to deal with one number if it has a gun in it when I am not wearing it.

I have the basic box like Mike and Bob, and when using it, carry it like Bob does. I used it a lot in CA, but now mostly use it for road trips.

Locally, If I'm going into the Doctor's office or post office or something, I'll just stick the gun in the center console and lock the car. YMMV depending on crime in your area for just using the center console. Honestly, I ignore the "no guns" stuff in a lot of places. I carry my gun into the local post office, but wouldn't do it in one of the city post offices.

I never used one.  Even though I don't live in Denver, I follow their "in a locked compartment in a locked vehicle" dictum when necessary --Post Office, Med places, some others. I typically ignore no guns signs otherwise and I always carry in my bank.

Times have rapidly and disappointingly changed in Commierado, and the enslaved hoi polloi has been forced under media pressure to get all paranoidey and skeerdy-cattey about guns, so it's a different world from when I first came to the free world of Colorado in the mid 60s.

I may consider getting a lockbox at some point.

WHATEVER YOUR DEFINITION OF "INFRINGE " IS, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT.

I’ve kinda settled on 1st choice- holtstered on hip. 2nd choice- securely locked in mounted lock box. 3rd choice- locked in cabled box.
The Hornady alpha elite box is 16g steel, much heavier and stronger than my old gun vault. The cable system is also much more robust.
I live outside a small Midwest town with plenty of crime in some neighborhoods but almost no daytime stuff and almost nothing 5 miles outside of town where I live and bunker in before dark.
I will not admit to sometimes carrying concealed in places that might or might not be properly posted against it. Locally, it is pretty rare for me to feel I need to vehicle secure.

Certainly comfort with doing that will depend on your state/local laws. Here, as in many states, all they can do is ask you to leave. You're breaking no laws other than simple trespass laws if you refuse to leave when asked.

What you say is true. But in a small town where most of the law enforcement folks are friends or acquaintances etc  there might be some flexibility. Better yet if nobody knows anything about anything. After all, they have real issues to pursue.
Theoretically of course. I would never test those limits.
