WW2 Bunker Fake Air Vent

Do you think it was a real vent, just one with construction to divert grenades?

Possibility the air vent has both top and bottom openings to facilitate air flow and the grenade thing was done on purpose or even unintentional especially considering the wide range of grenade designs that were being used.

The contraption brings to mind that episode of Tom & Jerry, in which Tom the cat puts the end of a rifle into a hole in the wall, which bends the butt of the gun right back out toward his face.

In a military paper?  Maybe she (the author) is/was in the Air Force?

Re: the grenade return - not a bad idea at all.  I can think of a couple ways off the top on how to make it dual purpose - provide air and return to sender.

Simple - an additional pipe at the top going up & around into the bunker would do the trick - air would make the turn, gravity would pull grenades down.

That was one of my second thoughts.

First thought was that, in the cartoon, it wouldn't have been the butt of the shotgun that got bent back around.
