Battlefield 2

OK, anyone else download the Battlefield 2 demo yet?  It is MUCH better than Battlefield 1942, with the exception of still not doing quite as much damage with firearms as I would like to see.  It is hard on my computer, though, a new video card is almost a sure possibility now.  One of the features I really like is the built in command structure.  There is a commander, and squads, each of the squads has a leader.  Commander can sit back and play really as a RTS game, something like StarCraft.  Squad leaders can call up requests, and take commands.  It is really a quite fun game.

Yeah, I like what I've seen in the demo so far. Unfortunately, I can't run it on my outdated system so I've been having to use my brother's to play it.

If only I had some money to build a new PC. :\

Heya, I've been trying to get it. Can you get some guys together who have the demo and seed a torrent of it? The download sites are impossible. Sad Once I've got it, I can seed too.
I got my copy from the File Rush torrent -- have you tried that one?

Try the torrent.  I had a heck of a time getting it to work.  I finally used the link on EA's site, to whatever gaming site they linked to, and used the FTP link with an actualy FTP client.

It's looking pretty sweet right now, but I don't know about $50 sweet.  Especially when my computer is only chugging along at medium settings.  Couple that with the fact that next week, the release date of DOD:Source is going to be released.  If it is anytime soon, I may just end up playing that instead, as it is already payed for.

I'm thinking the same.  Then, I look at all these guns, especially some that I hardly shoot.  Some of these may be ditched in favor of money for something that gets used every day, much as I hat to do it.

I like it.
The heli flight model is much better than the one from Desert Combat, and I love now having a HUD for flying, before I had no clue where the horizon was.

Freaking love it. Fun stuff. I agree on there needing to be more firearm damage, though.

When you get a GOOD pilot and copilot pair in the SU-34, its fricken awesome.  Too bad most pilots just circle around and the copilot cant do anything with his missiles.

Oh, if you're waiting for a ride on the Essex, jump in the SAM on the fantail of the ship, I'll sit there and spin around for a while waiting for another F-35 to spawn, at least you arent sitting exposed on the flight deck.

It is hard to get a good pilot/copilot pair going, but when you do, you can put a hurting on them.

Same thing for Commander/Squad leader.  I was playing as Commander last night, and had a a squad leader that cooperated with me.  It is hard enough to get people to even join the squads, but when you do, and get a competent leader, you can do some serious damage.  When you get some communication going between the two, you can suddenly make the game so much easier.

Then some idiot with a higher rank (still trying to figure the rank thing out) decided he wanted to be commander, and lost us a bunch of rounds.  The team mutinied, and put me back in charge Cheesy  That was awesome, I'd neer seen anything like that before.

Can't wait for my copy and it sounds like a good excuse for an upgrade to my gaming machine.

If you're getting reasonable performance from your machine with the demo what system are you running? Processor? Ram? G/card?

Just curious as to how much money I need to throw around to get  good performance. Are we talking Doom 3 levels of stress on my system?

Here's the specs on my system:
The rest of my comp is here:
MSI Neo2-V (IIRC) Intel 865PE Mobo
Windows XP Pro SP2 (I don't need the helpful solution that Windows is my problem, thank you very much)
Intel P4 2.4C
Asus 9600XT
1G Geil Golden Dragon Ram
Vantec AeroCool Heatsink
30G Maxtor 5400 ATA-133
80G Western Digital 7200 ATA-100
Lite-On DVD-/+RW
Antec 350W Smart Power supply

It isn't too bad.  I haven't figured out how to bring up the FPS gauge yet, but it is playable at 1024x768 at high settings.  Starting to get choppy, though.  Gotta decide if I am just going for a new videocard (from what I've been seeing, I can gvet about 2-3x the FPS out of a 6600GT than the 9600XT), or a whole new system, though.

It seems to be about as hard on the system as HL2 is, at least somewhere in that area.

Ugh, I can imagine the complaints of spawncamping.

That's one thing that almost stopped me from playing Day of Defeat Beta 1.2 (or 3, can't remember exactly which) ... The Omaha map allowed spawncampers to literally sit inside your spawn room and shoot you as you spawned.  The only way to survive was to spam grenades like mad and hope the BGs don't see the one that gets them...

I haven't played Battlefield 2, but if it actually permits spawn camping to a big extent, I don't know if I want to.

Spawn campers suck.  Hope you don't take any offense to that, but they do.

OTOH, when there is only one base left, what else are you supposed to do?  I guess I have more of a problem when someone sits and spawn camps when it is not the only flag left.  But if that is the only way they can get kills (which it often is), I just feel sorry for them.

Yea, spawn campers generally do suck.  I never understood the thrill of sitting in one spot and shooting someone as they spawn in.  One could do it to 'bots and have just as much fun.  Unless, of course, one is an jackass.
Fortunately, in games like TFC (amongst others, ) voting systems were implemented to allow folks to remove the obnoxious.....  Does B2 have this?

If the other team is any good
That assumes the other team is, of course, any good.  But how exactly are players going to get any better if their whole gaming experience consists of "spawn in - die - respawn - die - " wash, rinse, repeat until pissed off into leaving that server?

I will admit to sitting there shoulder to shoulder with two other BMPs and a raft playing 'who can shoot the spawner first' in the last two minutes of a game when we had all the bases.
Perfectly acceptable, as long as you have the other bases.  Like I said, my biggest problems is the people who decide to snipe the main base from the get-go, just to get kills.  I don't really even have a problem with taking a tank into a base and killing spawners, if you are trying to take that base.  Basically, spawn camping becomes OK when you are trying to take that base.

Of course, the better system would be to implement something like DOD, where you spawn somewhere where the other team can't get to you.  Then, you have the problem with people camping to pathways out, but at least you aren't being dropped the second you appear, and have a chance to fight back.

Unless, of course, one is an jackass.
Unfortunately, there are way too many of those that are allowed to play games online.  It was on one of these gun boards that I was arguing with a guy.  It was his belief that it was OK to run cheats, because the (stolen) game bored him in its original form.  The cheats made it more fun for him, so it was OK to ruin the people who actually payed for the game's experience.

But yeah, there is a vote kick feature.

Unfortunately, going back to the Jackass thing, there are people who will get on a server and do nothing but run votekicks the entire time.  And, since the name of the initiater is not given out, you can't vote to kick them.

Too many jackasses in the world.  This is why I want my own servers, I have never had a problem on them.

I like the teamplay, but it is so hard to getr anyone to work together.  When you get a good team together, and start communicating and giving and taking orders, you can usually leave a trail of waste with little problem.

Still on the demo, too.  Never buy games until they at least drop to $40.

God, I'm wishing they'd come out with Team Fortress 2......

No offense to the Battlefield crowd, but TFC was the game that really got me into online gaming...
