SCORE!
« on: December 25, 2007, 08:14:25 AM »
Opened a Christmas gift from Mom and it was a 1959 edition of the Culinary Institute of America cookbook!

Mom has one that Grandma gave her when Mom and Dad got married. It's the BEST cookbook I've ever seen. VERY comprehensive.

I've been wanting one for some years, and they're very hard to find.

It's interesting to see, though, how emphasis during that time had a distinct focus on canned items, although this cookbook by no means is a "open a can and dump it in a pot" cookbook.

This cookbook balances preprocessed items with canned. It also has excellent sections of definitions on different foods, and has a very good section on canning your own food.

Last Christmas it was a 1908 copy of the American Standard and Sanitary Company's boiler, furnace, and radiators handbook.

I LOVE having a Mom who's in the rare book trade! Cheesy

I have an old (too lazy to check) McCall's Cooking School Cookbook. Ex got one of my favorites: "Adventure's in French Cooking" by (I think) Miriam Guidroz who's actually Belgian, big difference!
The "Dragon Lady" also got my 10" chef's knife, good old carbon steel scored in a farm auction!

Do ya' watch "Good Eats" w/ Alton Brown? He gets into the science side!

Bon apetite!

I'm an Alton Brown devotee.

Mtnbkr, Mrs. Mtnbkr, and I met him at a book signing a few years ago. Have the signed cookbook and everything.

VERY funny guy in person.

Mrs. Mtnbkr went early and scored us tickets 86 and 87 to the signing...

Met a friend of mine from college who had gotten ticket 480 something... Smiley

So, you've met the Master of All Things (except off-road motorcycling) in person?.....

Now I AM envious of you......  grin

Yeah, I gotta say he is just as entertaining in person as he is on TV.  Seemed to be a very down to earth sort too.

The only book I got for Christmas was a book on Pulitzer prize winning photographs, the stories behind them, and even the camera settings where available.  It was unexpected and very welcome.

Neat book, Chris.

The thing I liked about Alton Brown at that signing was that he said "if you have a ticket, your book WILL be signed, no matter how late it gets."
