Seriously considering one of these for next spring...
« on: December 23, 2007, 06:52:12 AM »
http://powersports.honda.com/atvs/sport/model.asp?ModelName=TRX400EX&ModelYear=2008&ModelId=TRX400EX8

There are so many places to ride here.

I did a fair share of tooling around on a YZ80, ATC185 and ATC200x when I was younger. I really miss it. I would probably have to take the shell off my pickup, but...

I really want one. grin

I know for sure I want a 4 stroke, and I don't want anything smaller than a 400.

We bought a used Suzuki 250 4x4 QuadRunner a couple of years ago.  Now I don't know how we ever got along without it.

We have 35 acres of river bottom and it's almost a mile to the river.  I can hook up a 4x8 trailer and run down for a load of firewood much easier than taking a pickup, plus I can usually drive right up to the downed tree instead of carrying logs to the pickup.

Thats sounds like a great use for one.

If I do convince myself to get one, I'll probably get a used one as well, if I can find one that has been well cared for. I'm looking more at the sportier ones as it will just be a toy, but I haven't ruled out the more utilitarian models.

So where is that picture?  Looks sorta like northeastern New Mexico.

Or heck - it looks a lot like much of Montana.

Pretty darn close, tallpine, that's looking down into the Rio Puerco valley just outside of Albuquerque.

I'd love to have one of those. My uncle has a couple of quarter horses but we haven't ridden them in ages. He does team roping though, so they get plenty of exercise...

Looks like a great place for my four wheeler.  Except my four wheeler has two wheels.  And it runs on fat little man power.

Where's the bottom chainstay/downtube pivot on that suspension bike?

(Is it covered from view by the front chainring?)

jamis-did you jack the seat up for the photo?  Can your feet reach the pedals from that height?

Well, I did spend a winter logging about halfway between Mora and Angel Fire Wink

I knew it couldn't be MT because there were too many jet contrails.

I have a friend who sprays weeds for a living, and he has gone to all Honda ATVs.  He spends about $7-8K on each one, uses them hard a couple years, and trades them in.  The one thing that I've found that is hard on ATVs is driving them slow, because they get too hot.  I did weeds for a rancher a couple summers ago, and the dang thing would get so hot that I couldn't sit on it anymore, even driving in lo range to keep the rpms up.  I would start at 5.30am and by 9.30am it was too hot to work anymore Sad

My first reaction was "Hey, he got them to paint his name on the bike." It took about fifteen seconds for that light bulb to start glowing.  cheesy

Yeah the bottom pivot is behind the chainring.

I kinda wanted to know if the pivot was near the chainstays or on the downtube side of the seat tube, hence my asking.  I guess I was too subtle in the posing thereof.

(Not keen on pedaling against the suspension, per the former technology, myself...)

Make that a third person.

Buy used.  Look hard enough, you can find a decent used one under $2k.

Oh its at the seattube end of the chainstay.

Well, lessee....a double cheeseburger and fries costs roughly equivalent to two gallons of gas. How many miles do you get to a double cheeseburger & fries?  More than the 90-100 the Pious gets on 2 gallons of gas?

Of course, you've still got to buy your food on top of the gas ...

That double-cheez and fries gives you about 1200 calories.

A bike burns about 50 calories per mile, so 1200 calories gives you about 24 miles (not counting residual caloric needs).  I think that $6 for Burger King could be spent on 2 gallons of gas for my truck and get me almost 40 miles, in less time than the bike.  My caloric needs are much less since no exercise is involved, so a twenty five cent granola bar can sustain me for the same trip.

Not that cyclists fuel themselves off of BK value meals, or that I never cycle.

He's probably already exceeding noxious emissions standards.  Add burritos, and he would have to be fitted for an afterburner.  cheesy
