On this year's elk hunt with the best friend, his son, and son-in-law, I kept the 1911 in an IWB holster. The first evening, when the tent warmed enough to do without my sweater, I left the gun, visible, on my belt. My honorary nephew, who I have been shooting with since he was in diapers, asked why I was carrying.
I answered with "Mostly, because I can," and went on about it being best where I can reach it and other somewhat wordy explanations.
When I paused for breath the kid gave me "the look," cocked his head and said,
"Huh, I'd've said 'For self protection.'"
*sigh*
