Not sure what I think
« on: February 02, 2008, 06:44:35 AM »
On the one hand he is a prison escapee. On the other, he has apparently been clean since escaping. Is there any real reason to put him back in jail after 30 years?

Quote
LAS VEGAS   A convicted armed robber who broke free from a Florida prison more than 30 years ago was arrested by Metro Police in Las Vegas on Thursday along with three other fugitives, according to FOX5Vegas.com.

Charles D. Free, now 61, escaped from jail in 1975 when he was still known as Jack Hazen. He changed his name and social security number, moved to Las Vegas, got married, raised children and landed a construction job, FOX5Vegas reported.

Authorities said they tracked down Free based on a tip from a cold case detective in Tallahassee, Fla. He didn't seem at all surprised when police came to his home to take him into custody.

"(Hazen) came to Vegas 23 to 25 years ago (and) married under the name Free," said Sgt. Dave Stansbury. "His family had no idea didn't know his prior name, didn't know his history, just knew him as a hardworking, tax-paying citizen here in the valley."

Patrick Atherley, a family friend, said Free was a clean-cut, quiet, helpful man.

"(It's) a total shock to me. I had no idea. Who does?" said Atherley. "(I) never had the slightest indication he was hiding something. (He was) always straightforward and upfront, and that's the way he was."

He changed his SSN...to who's?  So that's identity theft I'm presuming.
He's a convicted armed robber.  Pretty serious felony.
Yeah, stuff his ass back in the clink.

So, where do we draw the line with prison escapees? If they break out and keep there noses clean for 10 years do we give them a pass? 20 years?

For which crimes do we give out "Get out of jail free" cards? He broke more laws in breaking out of jail. It's not like he was originally in for a victimless crime either.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Isn't rehabilitation one of the end goals of prison? For a man to break out of prison only to lead a productive crime free life, not sure what I would do if I were a prosecutor or judge.

That is the key question here, imo.
Seems he's rehabilitated and a productive member of society, therefore showing the system it worked.

SS# = ID theft?  hmmm... no worse than most illegals, and what do we do to them?
I say give him a free ride home to visit his family!!!

Interesting conundrum.

However, now he has an entirely new issue - unraveling his false identity.  There are dozens, maybe hundreds of people and businesses that will be affected. All of them will have to completely redo their books and recordkeeping because of this dude.  That, in an of itself, takes my sympathy down to almost zero.

Toss him back in the clink for a few months as a slap on the wrist and then turn him loose. There don't seem to be any details of his original crime, but if no one was hurt and he's been clean for 30 years, I doubt he'll start trouble now.
