Humans Heat Building...

Sweden Uses Humans to Heat Building

    * Swedish commuters' body heat to warm office
    * Oslo's Sewage Heats Its Homes
    * Meet your Attic: A Collector of Energy
    * Nearly half of all Swedes back new nuclear power: poll

http://www.enn.com/energy/article/30787/

The gorgeous Greta Garbo was from Sweden. Uma Thurman, Candice Bergen, and the wide-eyed Gyllenhaall sibs all trace their pretty genes back to that icy country, too. We've got to say, as a people, the Swedes are pretty smokin'.

And now, the people of Sweden are joining their hot bodies together for a good cause: To help the environment.

Get your mind out of the gutter it's all perfectly innocent. Under an innovative new plan, the body heat from more than 250,000 people who pass through Stockholm Central Station each day will be captured and used to warm up water in a series of pipes, which will be pumped into a new office building nearby.

"All people produce heat, and that heat is in fact fairly difficult to get rid of," property administrator Karl Sundholm told AFP. "Instead of opening windows and letting all that heat go to waste, we want to harness it through the ventilation system."

"This is old technology, but used in a new way. It's just pipes, water and pumps, but we haven't heard of anyone else using this technology in this way before," Sundholm added.

The energy-efficient ventilation system is expected to reduce the building's heating bills by 20 percent, and will cost a very reasonable amount just over $30,000. Let's hear it for all those hot Swedes.

Kind of neat.

The average human gives off about 800 btu's of heat. This piece of data sometimes is forgotten by hvac installers. Hot restaurants or stores are a prime example. Usually happens when guys that do houses decide to jump into the commercial market.

Yea, screw those Swedes.  Buy oil from the Norwegians!  Who sell a third as much oil as the Saudis, but balance their checkbook a heck of a lot better.

Mall of America has a gross area of 4.2 million sq ft. (390,000 m?), with 2.5 million sq ft. (230,000 m?) available as retail space.[4] The mall is a nearly symmetrical building, with a roughly rectangular floor plan. Over 520 stores are arranged along three levels of pedestrian walkways on the sides of the rectangle, with a fourth level on one side. An addition planned north of the mall will allow for up to 900 stores. Four "anchor" department stores are located at the corners. The Mall is organized into 4 different zones, each with its own decorative style.

Despite Minnesota's sub-zero temperatures in the winter, only the mall's entrances are heated. Heat is allowed in through skylights above The Park at MOA. Heat is produced by lighting fixtures, other electric devices and also by employees and guests of the mall in sufficient amounts to keep it comfortable. In fact, even during the winter, air conditioning systems need to be run nonstop during peak hours to ensure a comfortable shopping environment.[5]

Nothing new, I've heated my house with human body heat for quite some time.
It's better and cleaner than wood, and smells delicious!

Nothing new here - the guys who professionally design commercial buildings have been allowing for the heat load of the building's human inhabitants for a long, long, time . . . along with the heat of the lighting, the heat of office equipment, etc. etc.

I haven't run the numbers myself, but I remember reading that each cubic centimeter of human tissue produces more energy than a cubic centimeter of the sun . . .

Of course, the sun has a lot more cubic centimeters, and the old square-cube law comes into play when it comes to radiating the heat away . . .

So, I should rent out a part of my house to several circus fat ladies, and also invite a couple of politician blowhards to circulate the warm air given off by the fat ladies.   grin
