NEW YORK - An explosive device caused minor damage to an empty military recruiting station in Times Square early Thursday, shaking guests in hotel rooms high above "the crossroads of the world."

Police blocked off the area to investigate the explosion, which occurred at about 3:45 a.m.. No one was injured. The blast left a gaping hole in the front window and shattered a glass door, twisting and blackening its metal frame.

"If it is something that's directed toward American troops than it's something that's taken very seriously and is pretty unfortunate," said Army Capt. Charlie Jaquillard, who is the commander of Army recruiting in Manhattan.

He said no one was inside the station, where the Marines, Air Force and Navy also recruit.

Witnesses staying at a Marriott hotel four blocks away said they could feel the building shake with the blast.

"I was up on the 44th floor and I could feel it. It was a big bang," said Darla Peck, 25, of Portland, Oregon.

"It shook the building. I thought it could have been thunder, but I looked down and there was a massive plume of smoke so I knew it was an explosion," said Terry Leighton, 48, of London, who was staying on the 21st floor of the Marriott.

Members of the police department's bomb squad and fire officials gathered outside the station in the early morning darkness, and police cars and yellow tape blocked drivers most of them behind the wheels of taxicabs from entering one of the world's busiest crossroads. Police began allowing some traffic through around the start of rush hour.

Though subway cars passed through the Times Square station without stopping in the early hours of the investigation, normal service was soon restored, with some delays.

The recruiting station, located on a traffic island surrounded by Broadway theaters and chain restaurants, has occasionally been the site of anti-war demonstrations, ranging from silent vigils to loud rallies.

In October 2005, a group of activists who call themselves the Granny Peace Brigade rallied there against the Iraq war. Eighteen activists, most of them grandmothers with several in their 80s and 90s, were later acquitted of disorderly conduct.

The recruiting station was renovated in 1999 to better fit into the flashy ambiance of Times Square, using neon tubing to give the glass and steel office a patriotic American flag motif. For a half century, the station was the armed forces' busiest recruiting center. It has set national records for enlistment, averaging about 10,000 volunteers a year.

Police said it was too early to say if the blast may have been related to two other minor explosions in the city.

In October, two small explosive devices were tossed over a fence at the Mexican consulate, shattering three windows but causing no injuries. No threats had been made against the consulate, and no one took responsibility for the explosion, police said.

At the time, police said they were investigating whether it was connected to a similar incident at the British consulate on May 5, 2005.

In that incident, the explosions took place in the early morning hours, when Britons were going to the polls in an election that returned Prime Minister Tony Blair to power.

In both cases, the instruments were fake grenades sometimes sold as novelty items. They were packed with black power and detonated with fuses, but incapable of causing serious harm, police said.

this attitude always bothers me. it seems to me if it's directed at civilians it should be taken even more seriously. the military, and police agencies are being paid to put themselves in harms way for us, the people of the US. comments like this tend to make me feel as if we (the potUS) are seen as the drones who's only purpose is to support the military (and police) machine.

other than that, i can't imagine this (and those other bombings) weren't caught on tape. there's probably enough surveilance cameras in manhatten, that they can piece together the tapes and follow the perp all the way home.

make the world idiot proof.....and you will have a world full of idiots. -g2

Code Pink taking it to the next level? It amazes me that the leftist loons can never see when they've actually become terrorists. If this actually twisted the door frame and shook a hotel four blocks away, that was a pretty serious charge, not just an M-80 taped to the glass.

Fine with me. That sort is another reason I'm armed, not just criminals and Islamist extremists. If they want to try to blow up Americans and fight Americans, they'll get a fight that'll be over damned quick.

Hard to tell if it's that or just some punks who think they're being rebellious.  Or maybe it's Obama's buddy Bill Ayers.

The Kos Kidz are all screaming that it's a rightwing plot to make the left look bad.  rolleyes

Also, a student was just arrested at UC Davis with pipe bombs in his room. Wonder what that was all about.

Other stories note that the bomb was tossed by someone on a bicycle, who then pedaled away.  Over on BikeForums, there is a thread on what brand of bicycle should be used for such activities.  The Jamis Jihad has been suggested as a marketing opportunity.  Whom do we know here who rides a Jamis.......

Obviously, since nobody on the left ever does ANYTHING to make their "side" look bad.  Vast rightwing conspiracy indeed.

Also, a student was just arrested at UC Davis with pipe bombs in his room. Wonder what that was all about.

I only attended college for two semesters, but I don't remember things ever getting bad enough that I felt I needed pipe bombs.  I did spend a few classes sleeping in the library, but this.... whole nother level.

Obviously my cyclocross bike with its steep gearing and knobby tires is much more suited to this task.  Its not a Jamis.....

Mark Levin mentioned that several Democratic legislators were mailed pictures of the station prior to the attack.  I don't know what that's about, or what his sources are, but it's out there.

I used to be a left wing anarchist bike messenger (in NYC) , its a small, very small club of people who smoke to much pot and drink to much and brag about their exploits.
It is undoubtedly one of the "blac bloc".
These people are so dumb they vote dem because they think it is the lesser of two evils and refuse to acknowledge they are voting to take the tools of revolution (guns) away from the working class.
If he isn't caught by monday or tuesday  then the NYPD has gotten real incompetent.
This guys "friends" will drop a dime on him for 1000$ no doubt whatsoever.

If any LE want me to infiltrate them for you I'll need a NYC carry permit and full medical bennies for a year plus what ever rookie NYPD cops make per annum.

50 rounds fired at close engagement range at a car in which the occupants were not firing back. Only 21 rounds actually hit the actual car. The other 29 went on to hit occupied houses and a train station.

You were saying, about NYPD's competence?  smiley

Betcha this is a test case of "useful idiots." See how gullible a group of "protestors" are, and do a few trial runs. Then, get 'em all going, and instead of handing them paper bags with souped up M-80s in 'em, hand 'em knapsacks full of semtex and nails (but tell them it'll "just scare the commuters in the subway").

From some reports, it was an ammo can filled with low-grade explosive.

An ammo can filled with -what-? Be awful darn low-grade if it took a whole ammo can - even .223 size... Black powder maybe?

Heck, the flash powder fireworks a friend insanely crafts for July 4th do that, in a toilet-paper-roll size package...

And who was saying bombs in times square wouldn't happen?

Make those puppies a little stronger and pack in some nails, marbles, anything hard that'll fly and just let one off here and there every couple of days.  Hell, just do the same with a pipe any moron can make.  See what happens to NYC, or any major city for that matter.
That is all. *expletive deleted*ck you all, eat *expletive deleted*it, and die in a fire. I have considered writing here a long parting section dedicated to each poster, but I have decided, at length, against it. *expletive deleted*ck you all and Hail Satan.

Low explosives are called such because it is more of a very rapid burning, like a smokeless powder.  The force of the explosion depends in large part by how high the pressure gets before the container holding the explosive gives way.  Unless the bomber sealed the lid on very securely, like with epoxy, that lid will pop off very quickly, and damage will be minimized.

So, either it was made by an expert who wanted to limit the amount of damage, or, more likely, it was built by an amateur who didn't know or care about such things.
