My home town - first shooting death in almost 30 yrs
« on: March 17, 2008, 10:03:52 AM »
Just talked to my parents.  They were telling me about a death in my home town (Crowell, TX).  It's the first non-self-inflicted death by gunshot in almost three decades.  The last was a guy who "got all drunked up" and was dumb enough to greet a state trooper with the business end of a rifle.

The family moved there after I left for college so I don't know them.  Mom said the father was openly abusive to the whole family in more ways than one.  The fifteen year old daughter is the one who capped him.  Mom said word through the grapevine is that in addition to physical and emotional abuse he was being sexually abusive, too.  Talk is it will probably end up being ruled self-defense.

At least when I tell people where I grew up, they ask "Columbus, OH?"

.....No, do I sound like I'm from Ohio?  (Texas accent).

I know there are much smaller towns in Texas, Brad.  But we're not all blood relatives here.

Yeah, a "little town" around here is about 150 people.  Actually, that's a fairly big town  grin  A post office and a bar are the only prerequisites.  The PO is optional.

Our daughters graduated in a class of about 12.  A lot of these small schools, the first thing they ask a prospective teacher hire is how many kids do you have? (to add to the school class size) Wink

Sometime back, there was one little town that had maybe 2 kids and they hired a teacher with 3 or 4 kids which put them up over the minimum of 5 (?) to stay open.

There was a murder-suicide in our county maybe 8-10 years ago, but I don't remember if anything has happened since then.  A guy out in our neighborhood got drunk a couple years ago and took a shot at his sister, but unfortunately only wounded her  rolleyes

Brad,

That sounds like a pretty good record, to have no murders for thirty years.  I bet no one is allowed to have guns in your town.  Because these things usually tend to happen when a gun sneaks in, then it starts killing people.  Any info on how the gun got into town?  To keep this from happening again, the town should make sure there are no more guns in town that have sneaked in over the years.   Good luck.  smiley

Dude, I can't believe people from your town think guns are the answer! Don't they watch the news!

God, the prospect of victims...defending themselves...

On a serious note, I'm glad the girl was able to defend herself effectively. If the rumors of abuse are true, I feel truly sorry for the entire family.

I work at a call center.  The first customer I talked to Saturday is living in the small town I grew up in, way across the country.  I knew they'd torn down the High School about 5 years ago, but they just tore down my elementary school.  Considering how miserable my elementary years were, I'm wondering why that hurts so much.   undecided
