When seconds count, the police can be there in minutes...

Why do they always refer to this as a "robbery gone awry" or "robbery gone wrong"? To me, it's exactly what the violent home invaders were prepared to do, and did.

Gunshots bring abrupt end to frantic 911 call

    * Story Highlights
    * Woman told dispatcher someone was breaking into her home
    * She was shot dead
    * Police believe it was a burglary gone wrong

WEST COVINA, California (AP) -- A woman was asking a 911 dispatcher for help when her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence.

She was shot to death.

The woman told the dispatcher someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said.

"Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said.

Deputies arrived at the house, 20 miles east of Los Angeles, a few minutes after Wednesday's late morning call.

The woman, whose name was not released by police, had been shot several times. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

"At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry," Rosenberg said.

Investigators are trying to determine if anything was taken, Deputy Luis Castro said.

While police were investigating the shooting, a man arrived at the home asking about his wife.

When he heard that the woman had been shot and killed, he collapsed and started to cry, saying "No! She just called me. You lie."

The man was placed in a patrol car and taken to a sheriff's station, police said.

Witnesses said they saw one or more men running from the house, Rosenberg said. Investigators used bloodhounds to conduct yard-to-yard searches.

No arrests had been made by Thursday morning, deputies said.

As a precaution during the search, a high school and an elementary school were locked down for about two hours, police Lt. Dan Brooks said.

Even better? In the comments for the local station there, a leftist blamed the "three strikes" law for this crime, saying that because the perps had two strikes, they had to kill the witness because they'd get 25 to life otherwise.

What the HELL is wrong with people like that?!

I saw this over on THR and it made me sick.  And for the family how sad.

Burglary gone awry?Huh?Huh?  I love that comment.  Leftist 3 strike comment, now I guess they won't have to worry about the 25yr part once they are caught.

So much for the whole "don't resist, just call 911" plan proposed by so many departments nationwide.

My wife has been bugging me to get a wall safe so that we can store a handgun downstairs like we do for her upstairs.

This story just prompted me to place that order.

Retain what's coming in; send off what is retreating.

Well, you going to pull those pistols boy,
or just whistle Dixie?

Or you could buy her a holster Wink

I can't agree more!

An intruder can kick in the vast majority of front doors in the US and be standing in the first room two seconds after the first noise is heard in the house. How fast can you open your safe again?

If your front door can be kicked in that quickly, you ought to invest in a steel door and lock plate. Reinforced hinges on the inside, not the outside, a deadbolt, and NEVER a double door.

Walking around the house with a gun in a holster is ridiculous. If you think you need to do that, you need a better door. There's plenty of four-button pop-open drawer safes out there that work really well.

I have one under the bed frame. One hand, a quick dance of fingers, the door flips open with a magnetic latch, and there's a SIG in my hand in about two seconds.

I also agree strongly. I would further suggest a steel door frame and reinforcement of the attached wall.

Many intelligent people choose to disagree with you. Some have even spent goodly amounts of time writing down their thoughts on the matter. (Others take it a step further.)

Excellent, taking personal responsibility for your safety. I applaud you. :)
However, I must ask: where are you right now, this instant? Even if you are, right now, this instant, in your bedroom, I do believe you know your own house's layout well enough to clearly see the point I am alluding to...
