Headed for Texas
« on: April 16, 2008, 10:06:31 AM »
I'm going down to Sheppard AFB this weekend, got a week-and-change of school to attend. I'll be flying into Oklahoma City, then driving south. I'm not especially excited about having to go through airports, but at least the weather should be warmer down there.  grin

I've never been through the Will Rogers Airport, or driven through OK. Anybody got helpful info?

Toll roads in Oklahoma.  Be prepared.

I'm curious why you didn't do a commuter hop from OKC to Wichita Falls?

It costs something on the order of $91 a week to rent a car, vs however much the hop would be round trip. Plus, this way I have wheels while I'm down there.  grin

When the agent ran a round trip from Sea-Tac to Witchita Falls it came out to around $1400. Sea-Tac to OKC is about $420.

Why OKC?  DFW is closer.  You might even connect through DFW to OKC.

We all have to go through the .gov-contract travel agency, they're the ones who routed it that way. I've got no idea why they do what they do. Last time I was down there I did the commuter hop out of Wichita Falls to DFW, then Denver to Sea-Tac (iirc).

This time it's going to be Sea-Tac to Denver, then Denver to OKC on a different plane.

I'm in Denver. I've got a couple hours to kill until my next flight, and Denver has free wireless.

The flight down was pretty smooth, only a couple bumpy spots. I was in seat 6E on the 737, just even with the #2 engine inlet. My seatmates were so-so. The guy to my right was a little guy, spent the whole flight tucked into a book. The passenger to my left, however, was a 280lb woman who barely fit into her seat, I was rubbing elbows with her the whole flight. At least she was quite, she spent the flight playing solitaire on her .gov laptop. (She had to use her CAC card to get on it, I guess she was a DoD civilian.)

It looks like my next flight is going to be on a CR7, in seat 5A, so I get to watch the scenery this leg.

The Fat ought to be charged more on planes, I hate having to "share" my seat with an obese person.  Good luck!

The flight from DEN to OKC went sweet. I had the window seat, the guy next to me was another skinny dude who just slept the whole flight.

The drive was good too. I got a Ford Focus with only 3,000 miles on it. The Turnpike was nearly empty.

When I got on base I found my room reserved, and there's even free internet in the room. Life is good.

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to figure out how to kill the weekend. There's a whole lot of nothing in my schedule from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening. Any suggestions?

Heidi Klum is too tall to fit in economy-class airplane seats.

I'm glad we drove to Colorado.

Alright then. Anybody local want to join my gang and help me rob a bank? Proceeds from our heist will go towards buying out the seats next to me for a comfortable flight back home.  grin

I won't be too far from ya this weekend - Crowell, my home town.  I wish it was just a titch closer and I'd meet up for a handshake and a beer.  Be nice to meet a fellow APS'er face to face.

How about sometime between noon and one?  That would give you some leeway and I'll have some free time for an hour or two after that.

Crowell is only 1000 strong so it really boils down to which side of the courthouse square has more parking spaces.  Call when you hit Vernon (half way) and we'll coordinate the "where".

He made it!

Enjoyed it thoroughly, Mike.  Hope I didn't bore you to tears.

For the rest of you non-believers ... proof positive, right down to the "Foard County News" office in the background.

Not a bit, it was really interesting getting the local perspective on an area that is so different from what I'm used to. I really enjoyed myself as well.
