I'm putting in a 20 amp outlet on a 20 amp breaker.

Am I correct to think that I need to use 12 gauge wire?

That sounds correct, IIRC.  I don't have my copy of pocket ref to verify; but the internet seems to agree with you.

12 gauge or larger.  The larger comes in if it's an especially long run.

14 gauge@120V is limited to 15.
