Amazing photo of a tall ship coming into Portsmouth
« on: August 16, 2008, 03:49:12 PM »
Taken yesterday, as this was a Tall Ships weekend in Portsmouth. This is the "Friendship", a replica vessel, 171 feet, three-masted merchant vessel. She's an East Indiaman of the sort used from New England in the 17th century.

Something just magical about that sort...  smiley

Indeed.  Stirs something in the soul.  smiley

Not to lessen the event, but it reminds me of one of the last shots in "Goonies" when the ship floats into the bay.  Probably one of the greatest movie moments from when I was a kid.

There's just some fantastic quality about this that's lost in the days of Chinese injection molded plastic.  Like holding a rifle made in the 1800's; theres just some nostalgia there that makes you smile.

Oh, that scene still gives me a shiver when it comes out from behind the rocks. I love that scene. smiley

This one, I went over to take a tour today, and even when she came into view at the dock, tall, tall masts, ivory-canvas sails furled and the billowing American flag flying high, she just stood out like a beacon of something wondrous and special among the bland container vessels.

This is the same vessel

She's only about ten years old! The craftmanship is incredible, beautifully dovetailed joints belowdecks, everything incredibly tight and solid, and the hold smells like cut wood and pine pitch. I'm just glad that people still know how to make a ship like that!

Setting Sun....

Also looking at the ship at the dock. She is pumping pretty hard from the bilges. Has quite the little boil going there.

Might be a balast system being pumped.

It is scenes like this that may help in the decision to move to VT as opposed to MT.  Closer to the ocean and sights such as this.  Just not going to see that out on the open prairie.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Yeah, not many prairie schooners left anymore Sad

Right now it is still a toss up.  Have to get the job first.  The inexpensive land in MT has a lot of advantages.

I get the same feeling when I see a big military ship go under the Golden Gate.

It's been a while.  I think the last was watching the USS Midway being towed to San Diego after berthing (storage) at either Oakland or Alameda.

Some of those old merchant vessels and warships serves for over a century.

They are magnificent examples of craftsmanship, effort, and determination.

Some still are. The Constitution is still commissioned. She's been out under 1/3 of sail. Not that they would, because she's a national treasure, but she's kept in a condition where she could quite literally sail across the world.

I like that.

30-some years ago I watched fireworks on Independence Day from the bridge of the USS King, in Norfolk, Va. as a guest of the captain.

Earlier that same day I toured USCGC Eagle.

Both were impressive but the Eagle blew me away. I will never forget it.

The Tallships are going to be in San Diego for the Festival of Sale this week.

They're selling tall ships?  How much?

I volunteered on the Friendship for two years when I still lived in Beverly.  Anyone can show up on volunteer days (Tues/Thurs nights, Saturday mornings) and learn a few things.  My friend and I stuck with it long enough to be invited on sails, which were, of course, great.

We were assigned to the mizzenwatch, and were specifically responsible for running sail.  That was most interesting on our trip to Gloucester in 2004, where only my leg muscles and determination kept me from falling from the topyard to the deck while we took up the topsail in rough water.  Fun times.  I moved away, but my buddy and his wife still live in Salem and get out to the volunteer sessions as much as possible.
