too many beeps (mild rant)
« on: August 21, 2008, 03:56:51 PM »
Just driving down the road and hear a series of electronic beeps.  Spooked me a little because it doesn't sound like any I've heard before.  So I'm wondering if it's the phone, the hand held GPS, the truck itself telling me it wants attention, the Tom Tom GPS, or maybe some other gadget I paid too much for and don't know what all the features sound like.  After some checking around it turns out it was a picture message on the phone, which has its very own special beep. rolleyes

Now I'm old enough to remember a couple decades ago, and if you heard beeps in the car you could count on it being the aliens trying to contact you.  Am I just too old for all the beeps and chirps of today?

griz, it was the aliens.  And they're here for you.  They are annoyed you didn't answer their beeps.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

It happens to me too.  Something beeps and I have no idea what it was.

I recently switched cellphones and I almost went ahead with getting the 2nd version of the LG Chocolate just because I didn't want to learn a new phone.  I ended up getting the LG nv2 because it still worked "close enough" like the old one and wouldn't throw me off.

That's IT!!!

Well, actually I thought about ignoring it, but it was from SWMBO.  So I could only ignore it a great risk to harmony, life, and liberty.

Has anybody else started hearing sounds that sound like cell phone noises in music on the radio while driving or am I losing it?  I always start a little until I remember my phone does not sound like that.

If I hear noises while driving, it's usually something like the muffler dragging  grin
Freedom is a heavy load, a great and strange burden for the spirit to undertake. It is not easy. It is not a gift given, but a choice made, and the choice may be a hard one. The road goes upward toward the light; but the laden traveller may never reach the end of it.  - Ursula Le Guin

I hear sounds out of the ordinary frequently.  Of course I am hypervigilant (according to the VA) so I probably am not a good one to ask about "beeps" and other noises.  I really hate it when I hear something at night and have to get up in my skivvies to check it out.  Good thing the neighbors aren't up all hours. grin

The beeps are sounded to awaken you from the alien-induced coma.    No telling how long you were gone, because you're put back at the same place and time.

How do you, uh, feel?  A thorough physical "examination" in the spaceship can be traumatic.

I had some cows dry up and sheep that seem a little off and some hens quit laying .  They were probably up there with you.

She is hot!
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

For a couple of years, I was a maintenance man for an apartment complex full of old folks.  AND THEY ALL HAD MY PAGER NUMBER.   shocked  THE HORROR.

It took me a couple of months to stop freaking out at every ringtone or electronic beep.

Wow for once I actually feel sorry for you.

This is one of the reasons I put a custom ringtone on my cellphone.

Dude.  Seriously.  No job is worth that amount of torture.   How many times a day did you get paged about kids on the lawn?

When I first started my job, we had a pretty weasel like Director.   He actually faught against having an On-Call roster.  He wanted us to answer the phone, day, night or weekend, for any issue the user felt significant enough to call about.  Unpaid.  Because it was "included in our salary".   It was "voluntary", but expect a screamfest if something broke over the weekend and you didn't come in to fix it.
