EU wants to ban 'sexist' TV commercials
« on: March 03, 2005, 10:18:52 PM »
MEPs want TV regulators in the EU to set guidelines which would see the end of anything deemed to portray women as sex objects or reinforce gender stereotypes.

This could potentially mean an end to attractive women advertising perfume, housewives in the kitchen or men doing DIY.

Such classic adverts as the Diet Coke commercial featuring the bare-chested builder, or Wonderbra's "Hello Boys" featuring model Eva Herzigova would have been banned.

The new rules come in a report by the EU's women's rights committee.

Swedish MEP Eva-Britt Svensson urged Britain and other members to use existing equality, sexism and discrimination laws to control advertising.

She wants regulatory bodies set up to monitor ads and introduce a "zero-tolerance" policy against "sexist insults or degrading images".

Ms Svensson said: "Gender stereotyping in advertising straitjackets women, men, girls and boys by restricting individuals to predetermined and artificial roles that are often degrading, humiliating and dumbed down for both sexes."

She added: "Gender stereotyping in advertising is one of several factors that have a big influence in efforts to make society more gender equal.

"When women and men are portrayed in a stereotypical way the consequence may be that it becomes difficult in other contexts to see women and men's resources and abilities."

The Advertising Standards Authority however had said there are already checks in place to prevent "discriminatory or harmful" material.

A spokesman said: "Although the ASA supports the overall objectives of the report... the approach suggested is inflexible and impractical."

My first instinct was "Crazy Europeans, who cares?"  but sure as snot, if they do thins someone will try and drag it across the atlantic.  So I'm going to throw out a crazy, revolutionary idea:

Men and Women aren't the same.
Some things men do better, some things women do better.
This is GOOD, as it leads to some really wonderful things in this world.

You insensitive clod. I, for one, yearn for the comedic prospects of a Russell Crowe endorsed feminine hygeine product line.

Or, in all honesty, a Sarah Palin-endorsed bolt-action rifle.

Gun adverts? In Europe?

Point taken.  Do they even have magazines like 'Guns and Ammo' anywhere else but the US?

Yes.

Swiss gun magazines look more like National Geographic in terms of glossy thickness, and make ours look like weak tabloids.

That's gonna go over real well with the Advertising types. Ads sell based on 3 appeals to the audience:

SEX
FEAR
HUMOR

Every ad to sell product can be dropped into one of those buckets.

Take away sex and what have you got. How can you sell bras by using humor or fear? Beer commercials use sex and humor. Perfume - all about sex, etc etc etc...

And no matter how one spins it, for sex to sell someone is going to get made into a sex object.

NOPE! The euro ad guys are gonna go nuts over this.

I don't watch commercials anyway.  This is just one more reason not to...

Would that ban carry over to 90% of all sitcoms as well?  Looks like the world will be watching static in high def.

I'm seeing Admiral and Mrs. Ackbar and her playtex bra.  He leans toward the camera shouting "Even gravity can't repel support of that magnitude."

Robot Chicken-style, of course...

Yep. Last I counted I saw three in the magazine rack in my grocery store. Plus, some places have stuff like Guns & Ammo", "Combat & Survival" and such. Many German or perhaps Swiss magazines as well.

The last Swiss shooting magazine I saw had a huge foldout picture of a Blaser sniper rifle.

They like their precision shooting stuff quite a bit.
