Good source for bulk 223?
« on: October 03, 2008, 03:26:22 PM »
I'm leery of venturing back into THR, and I figure APS knows everything.  So I'm asking y'all here.

What's a good current source for buying largish quantities of 223?

I usually load my own, which is why I'm so clueless about buying it.  I want a big pile of ammo in a hurry, and I don't have the spare time these days to load that much myself.

The best price I've seen so far was 500 rounds for $180ish shipped at AIMSurplus.

FWIW, Wal-Mart around here has 100rnds of Federal for $40.  That's not much more than the stuff at AIM.

AR15.com keeps a current list of prices for .223.  Actually, it is Gun-Deals.com now.  Anyway, it is a start.

Neat site, I bookmarked it.

That said, if you weed out the steel cased stuff, there are only a couple sources cheaper than the one I listed above.  AIM will get you 1000rnds for about $360, the cheapest I found with gun-deals was $324.

My garage.

4 Dillon presses, thousands of pieces of brass, a couple 8-pound cans of powder, a couple coffee cans full of bulk milsurp SS109 bullets from Widener's, etc.

There will be no steel-cased crap running through my ARs or AKs.  Wink

AIM has Prvi Partisan listed for $360, as well as something made by "a Department of Defense Contractor" for $340.

Anyone know anything about either of these?

Best I have seen lately is 0.35 per round for Igman M855 at Kieslers.

MiWall out in Arizona had bulk .223 for a good price.  Don't know if its available out here though.  Check the local gun shows if you can.  Other than that, I can't help you out cause I reload my own.

Couldn't tell ya.

I don't have the proper FFL or liability insurance to sell my reloads.

Go figure, I can give it away to family and friends, but if I take one red cent...

That's fine.  If I shrapnel a gun with my ammo, I can only blame myself.

I haven't done the math lately, but I was cranking out 50-round boxes of 200gr SWC .45 ACP for between $2.50-$3.00.  As my sources of wheelweights and scrap lead dry up, that's certainly gone up, too.

Today I picked up a couple pounds of AA1680 and 500 123gr Hornady .311" SP bullets for my AKs, VZ-52, and SKS rifles.  Having been a rangemaster for 10 or so years, all those thousands of pieces of brass I hoarded are coming in quite handy!

Oh, if you find any place that has Guatemalan M193 equivalent, it's very clean, also rather hot load, but you really ought to be able to see it in person...I wouldn't buy it over the web. (disclaimer, it has not been fired from a direct-impingement rifle, so I have no idea how well it works in an AR. Saigas will eat anything that goes bang.)

Apparently, some lots got into a hurricane down there, and even the battlepacks were compromised. So some lots will be perfectly sealed and be mirror-bright brass, others will have gotten wet and look like a corroded AA battery.

I just went and poked in the 5.56 chest. Wow, what an international mix. A can of British greentips on their strippers in bandoliers, a few battlepacks and boxes of the aforementioned Guatemalan, and some Israeli even. I haven't seen any surplus coming in lately, though. It seems to all be staying Over There.

What else can you buy now besides Lake City overruns or older lots, all that?

I've shot the Prvi stuff in other calibers.  Seems decent enough.  I've also shot some 223 made by "DOD Contract" and it shot well.  FWIW...

Someone, I forget who, had a bunch of surplus Radway Green. Very good, accurate, and clean.

Privi in 6.5mm Swede is good stuff.

Shot the hades out of it at an Appleseed last year.

Prvi 7.5 Swiss is just fine, I know that. Good if you don't want to eat up your match-grade GP-11. I would imagine their 5.56 is okay as well.

The only bad thing I'd ever heard about Radway is that some old lots from the 80's seemed underpowered and might short-stroke an AR, but other than that, anything made since then is perfect. All the Radway I have is 90's headstamps, and I just don't wanna use it up. :( Especially since it's SS109, and I still expect they'll eventually ban that.
