Rich Man's Garage
« on: September 27, 2008, 06:58:54 AM »
There is a certain wealthy comedian named Jay Leno. I suppose when one gets rich one's hobbies expand beyond what some see as normal. His certainly did.

You see, Jay's a car enthusiast. He's got a website devoted to explaining the details of his unique automobiles and it aint dialup friendly.

http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/

There are plenty of videos to watch when you're bored or you have free time.

He's also got a bunch of classic and vintage cars.

I guess that shows how much I know about the internet. I was trying to imbed videos. It turned out badly.

Forget about it.

You know, I don't know if you can embed video here or not....

And yeah, Jay Leno has a BITCHIN' garage...

They had a feature in Popular Mechanics on his car collection some years ago.

I drooled, and I really don't much care about cars.

The neat thing IMHO is the historical value of many of his cars.  Hopefully he wills them to a museum when his day comes.

One thing that always stuck with me about Leno was his appreciation of "hands on skills".  He seems to have a lot of respects for mechanics and other mechanically gifted types.  He wrote an article for PM years ago lamenting the fact that today's youth looks down on careers such as auto mechanics as being "below them".  He felt that those folks deserve a lot more respect for the knowledge and skills they develop than they get.

I didn't look at the links above, but are you guys aware that he drives many of his cars frequently?  He even drives the Baker Electric.  He's very much a hands-on collector and enthusiast.

Here's a PM article about Leno and his Baker, including a picture of him driving it.

I found the article. http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/jay_leno_garage/1302801.html

PM also has an archive of everything he's ever written:

It's a good magazine. I enjoy it.

I like that he really gets into the oddball and out-of-the-ordinary stuff like steam, electric, old Deusy's, etc., and that he goes to such great lengths to preserve them not only for posterity, but as actual drivers.

Disagree. I hope they sell to people just like him, who will appreciate them by driving them. IMO, buying a car and not driving it, is like buying a gun and not shooting it.

Popular Mechanics is an awesome magazine. They take a lot of flack for running articles on guns, but keep doing it anyway.  smiley

While that may be so they have'nt done a major article dealing with civilian gun use since 1998.

It was on cowboy action shooting: http://www.popularmechanics.com/outdoors/sports/1277291.html

Before that they published an article on the Medusa revolver in 1997:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/outdoors/sports/1277301.html

Maybe flack is the reason why they have'nt dealt with civilian gun use since.

Not really bothered by the gun thing.  It's not their primary purpose.  I'd rather read their articles on other misc mechanical stuff and read the dozen or more available gun rags for the hardcore gun stuff.

I seem to recall a response from the editor to a letter to the magazine after they ran the Medusa article:

"Guns are mechanical objects, and are within the scope of this magazine. We will continue to run articles on new and mechanically innovative firearms," or something to that effect.

Jay's collection IS and will be The most comprehensive museum on the history of the motorized carriage/ automobile.

Not only is he very hands on, he is truly a curator of automotive history.

And he's not as much a car guy as he is a motorcycle guy.
His motorcycle collection is probably the largest in the world.

I don't much care for his stand up routine.  But I have nothing but respect for his knowledge and appreciation of all things mechanically mobile.
