Photos from Rocky Mountain National Park
« on: October 08, 2008, 03:50:42 PM »
Went backpacking a couple weeks ago in Colorado. First time hiking above tree line. Stayed at 11k feet on the shore of Lawn Lake, very cool week.

Elk were in rut and all over.

For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Beautiful photos

If I may ask, who's the crew you went with?
"Rev, your picture is in my King James Bible, where Paul talks about "inventors of evil."  Yes, I know you'll take that as a compliment."  - Fistful, possibly highest compliment I've ever received.

Great photos.  Had to double check where you went; some of the landscape and vegetation in those photos looks a hell of a lot like the Eagle Cap wilderness area in Oregon.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Lawn Lake is at 11k feet and used to have an earthen damn that raised the water level in it considerably. Back in the eighties the dam failed and sent a 17 foot wall of water down the Roaring River. Killed quite a few campers, hikers and I'm pretty sure Estes Park Co was flooded from the dam break also.

RevDisk,
About two years ago I left the HVAC business and took some time off, laid around the house being a bum in between backpacking trips. Being middle aged, single, debt free (other than a small mortgage) with money in the bank allowed me that luxury. About six months ago I went to work at an outdoor outfitter store. This gave me great opportunities to meet folks that dig the outdoors as much as me. A buddy of mine from work and myself were invited to join these guys who are friends from college, every year they do a backpacking or climbing trip together. Usually I prefer a much smaller group or going out solo.

Nice pics.  What kind of camera did you use?

No ultralight backpacking for me  =D

I always lug my Canon Rebel XTi with a Tamron 17-50 2.8f lens and the Canon kit telephoto 75-300mm lens. With the low mileage on this trip I also carried my tripod.

Two years ago I took up photography as a hobby to force me to pay attention and "smell the roses" while hiking. It is a fun hobby that I don't take ultra serious. With modern technology I can take the same shot with several settings and then adjust in photoshop if need be. As time has gone by and I've learned my camera and the work in photoshop has been less necessary.

I'm not necessarily trying to attain the level of skill that someone like Oleg has, I'm just having fun while learning the basics!
