Ho wow.  I'm reading the first post thinking, "How could this guy be so far off?  Pearl Harbor happened in DECEMBER."
In my mind, it's still June. T_T

I have been thinking about this lately.

What would happen if Pearl Harbor were to be subject to a sweeping, surprise attack tomorrow morning? Or similar attack, on another day?

Would the U.S. rally, or would we just pander to "those poor, misguided, disadvantaged ______________ (fill in geo-theo-political group here)?

After watching patriotism soar/fizzle after Desert Storm; and again after 9/11, (particularly after that, an attack on our own soil and thousands of civilians dead) I am not so sure.

I fear we may have a couple months of indignant fervor, only to see it fall by the wayside. Hillary et. al. will bluster, only to be calling for accords a short time later, I bet.

Someone tell me it wouldn't be so. I need some cheering up. =|

Lot's of numb nutted individuals would put little flags on their cars for a while, allowing them to be blown off and end up in the gutter and hanging in bushes on the side of the roads. Then about 3-4 months later all the flags will be gone and they'll be back to their normal numb nutted ways and forget all about it. What a country...  ;/

They would wait for a Democrat president, so it won't happen tomorrow; wait and see if I'm not right.

I'd imagine that we would be hearing people calling for military action, assuming that the attack was an actual military strike against us like Pearl Harbor.

Watched quite a few Pearl Harbor documentaries on the military channel yesterday. Most interesting to me was the mini subs. Anyone else who's been to Guam might remember the mini sub they had sitting in front of the EM club there on base. I actually climbed down into the thing. Them guys was nuts!  :O

I did a little research myself on it last night and it turns out they made thousands of them but only 6 are known to still exist. The one on Guam is one of them. There's another on the bottom of the ocean at 1200 ft. Sunk by the Ward it still has live torpedoes, a live scuttle charge and human remains on board.

Same thing America did last time. Grab the civilization responsible, destroy 98% of their industrial capacity, sink over 95% of their merchant fleet, torch several cities and take away their overseas possessions. And then nuke them.

Twice.

You almost make it sound like that's a bad thing.  Pearl Harbor was a giant miscalculation by an Eastern power that wanted to neutralize American power long enough to complete a land/resource grab in Asia.  They were successul in this strategy against Czarist Russia ~ 35 years ealier, forcing an armistice on their terms, and expected to be so again.

Fast forward to the present.  What sort of coup de main could set us back on our heels long enough for another foreign power or organization to proceed with their efforts at conquest?  There doesn't seem to be anyone with genuine Lebensraum-style territorial ambitions right now.  China is joined at the hip with us, economically speaking.  The PDRK seems to be completely isolated, diplomatically.  Iran.... hmmmm.... Weaken the Great Satan, exert influence/dominance over the ME and crucial oil supplies, already aligned with Syria and Hezbollah elements throughout the region.  Strong commercial ties to Russia...   Wow.  My oh my.  Does the War Department know where the Iranian carrier fleet is?   Wait a tick... that's sooooooo last century.  Deniable WMD attack, maybe a series of EMP burstsf + smallpox + VX introduced onto the NYSE trading floor.  Yepper, THAT would produce a time of Great Suckage (apologies to John Ringo).

On the contrary. I remind people that any power that's stupid enough to try an attack of this scale upon the US at this present time will be screwed.

Sure, America will hurt. But the civilization that will try such a trick will hurt MORE.

Nowadays we could just nuke them first and save a lot of effort ;)

My father-in-law was there.

For reasons which are quite apparent, every year on 12/7 until the time of his death, he got bombed himself.

At least the Zionists say "Never Again".  We are standing around like cattle in a feedlot.  If anyone believes the new administration will have a robust, muscular and effective foreign policy (defined as: one that keeps us safe from foreign aggressors, where ever and however situated), they are delusional.  GWB may have been maladroit, but he put the barbarians on notice.  It is nice to be liked, it's important to be respected, but it's CRUCIAL to be feared.

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought
