Arsenal SLR 105 Value/Opinions
« on: December 28, 2008, 06:27:09 PM »
For our resident EBR aficionados:

I may have a line on a 5.45 Arsenal rifle. I've never owned an AK variant, and have in fact been standardizing on ARs. Someone mentioned to my wife that he might want to part with an SLR 105, and I'm waiting to hear asking price. I don't know exact variant or condition. I know that if I buy it I'll also stock up on ammo while still available and reasonably priced. I've read conflicting reports on reliability, although fit & finish are generally agreed superior (as they should be for the price). This would be a discretionary purchase, as I've already got more behavior modification devices and toys than I need, but not as many as I want.

Given the scant details, what's a fair value for these crazy times, and what other factors should I consider?

Thanks.

I can't speak for the newer ones, but the fit and finish on the SLR-96 I'd picked up a couple months ago is superb.

I would say to check condition. I run across too many AK derivatives that are, well, used as the AK was meant to be used, out in harsh conditions (like hunting with it on the back of an ATV, in the rain) with little or no maintenance. It will keep shooting forever, but that does ruin the finish and it might even have rust. Also, some people will use corrosive surplus ammo and not bother to ever clean the gun, and it could even have rust in the gas system as a result of that. So check condition thoroughly, don't buy sight unseen.

That's my only advice. The Arsenals are beautifully made, at least my older one is. I paid $525 for it in pristine, likely unfired condition, and every part was perfect, from the parts fit to the crisp and smooth double-hook trigger. I also believe that price was well below what they usually go for!

Don't forget mags! Beware of the orange ones that people have bubba'ed with a dremel to badly feed 5.56x45 variants. They won't work well for that, and they won't work right for 5.45 again either. I believe Bulgarian Waffles with the steel reinforced lips are the best made in that caliber. You can get them from K-VAR.

Thanks, Maned, that's the kind of feedback I'm looking for. I'm hoping this rifle has the scope rail and synthetic furniture. I wasn't interested in an AK for anything but collection-rounding, and would prefer 7.62 for practicality, but my wife likes the general idea. We'll see tomorrow what sort of deal it is...

I'm not sure which of their rifles came with the rail or not, but the rail is cheap and easy to put on any AK.

The newer Larue "iron" red dot that replaces the rear sight has gotten rave reviews thus far.

I've seen that, but I'm more of a fan of Aimpoints...tough and have the longest battery life, so you can turn it on and leave it on.

I have an EOtech 512 myself, for trouble. I can switch it from rifle to rifle and I love how fast you can pick up a target without any parallax.

The SLR-105 is the most sought after of Arsenal's stamped rifles.  It typically had none of the quality control problems seen in subsequent models, and tends to run like a freight train.

Ban era versions are going for $900 in today's superheated market and the non-neutered versions are going for quite a bit more.
