David Spade helps Phoenix police buy rifles

LOS ANGELES — The Phoenix Police Department has gotten some high-powered goodies courtesy of actor David Spade.

The one-time Phoenix resident donated $100,000 so that the department can buy approximately 50 AR-15 rifles.

Spade said he wanted to make the donation after seeing a TV news report about Phoenix officers having to buy their own rifles. Spade grew up in the Phoenix area and graduated from Arizona State University.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Alan Hill says the rifles will be given to patrol officers and that the agency was grateful for the gifts.

"These guys need to be able to do their jobs and I am just happy I could help," Spade said in a statement released by his publicist.

Hmm.  What's Mr. Spade's opinion on private ownership of those rifles, I wonder?  Still, good to see police at least as well equipped as other civilians should be.   =D  Wonder what kind of ARs they're getting for 2k a pop...

More than likely they are getting them with optics and magazines.

LE versions with Da Switch?

I doubt it.

I double-taked (double-took?) at the price per rifle as well, then realized they would need spiffy optics and nice magazines and slings and cases as well.

Still seems they should be able to get 'em for $1500 a piece, but I'm a choosy buyer and not shopping with someone else's money.

Very nice of Mr. Spade.

$1500 a piece? Someone is getting ripped off. Bushmaster M4's (Not Class III)  a year or two ago could be bought off the shelf for $940 or so. Add some eotech optics for another $350 and some 30 rd mags at $12 to $18 and you come in well under $1500. figure the police get a discount that us peasants don't and the cost is even less.

Local gunshop has a Class III M4 for sale. $1800. I know the cops would get a better deal than that. So putting optics on one of those and getting 2 or 3 decent mags should be doable at under or near $2K easily.

Yeah, I was thinking LE discount for what would cost the rest of us considerably more, not including the $200 tax stamp.

Odd that they're displaying a post-86 dealer sample.

Still very nice of Mr. Spade regardless of his opinion of private ownership.  No one probably expected him to shell out a $100k of his own cash as a gift.

The rifles would be well under $2k.  Optics, mags, slings, cases, spare parts for the armorer, etc, etc.  A very nice Christmas gift for the Phoenix PD.

In this area of Pennsylvania most, if not all, of the officers buy their own rifles, and most buy their own handguns, as well.

The only time I ever saw a Calico carbine in use as a police gun was up here. I was shooting with a couple of officers at the range one day (I had gotten to know them through the newspaper) and the Calico barfed out the trigger group.

Next time I saw that cop he had a Winchester lever action in .357 Mag. :)

LE versions with Da Switch?

Been a couple of years since I specifically looked for it, but I remember a Shotgun News ad listing post-86 full-auto M-16s for $500 a pop, LE-only (naturally).  Same company had fully-transferable M-16s for $3500-4000, IIRC.

Yeah, I knew about the LE "discount", hence my mentioning it.

Fully-transferable to non-LE garners a much higher price tag at times.
