Fixing scratches in baked enamel finish?
« on: January 31, 2009, 07:51:53 PM »
I had a little problem installing a cabinet on the backwall of my workbench, and I stupidly scratched up the black, baked enamel finish.  Check out how it is new: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00959182000P?

There are lots of fine scratches where it went all the way through the powder coat.  What would be the best paint or other cover up solution to make it look nice again, and also to avoid rusting or other problems in the future.

Thanks

Where it me I'd be trying a coat of matching color spray paint like rustoleum.  The scratches would still be there but would be color matched making them much less visible and there wouldn't be a rust problem.

Appliance dealers sell little bottles of paint to repair scratches/chips.  They are also available, often at significantly lower prices, in box stores or a real neighborhood hardware store.

I think white & black are the only colors these days - no more avacado or moonlight peach, sad to say.  If you do several thin coats with a day between to allow for complete drying you can build up surface enough to fill in a chip that went all the way to bare metal.  I know because I did that for 2 weeks as a youngster.  I also found out my older sister's head was hard enough to take a divot out of the chest freezer's finish.

stay safe.

i have covered/filled scratches with crayon. it usually works pretty well, and if you are not satisfied with the look you can heat it a little, wipe it off with a rag and alcohol and try something else.
