Apathy
« on: February 06, 2009, 08:39:24 PM »
We all have degrees of apathy.

Where do stand with yours?

Me, I'd say that my apathy is probably the only thing keeping me sane, but I do sometimes feel bad about caring so little about so many things. I think that is why I am considered cold hearted by those who only see the apathy on the surface and and don't know the warm soul inside.

Not that I really care though. :laugh:

I've got a high degree of apathy...

Until legislation starts threatning firearms or aviation. Then I get righteously pissed off.

But otherwise my apathy, like you, keeps me sane...i.e, keeps my head from exploding when I enter the politics forum and see the stuff "our" government is doing, or keeps my head from exploding when I'm at work...

I'm diligently working on increasing my already prolific levels of apathy.
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Try as I might, there's some things I just can't bring myself to caring about. Sports are one of 'em, Olympics especially. I really didn't care that Michael Phelps swims like a sperm. The baseball match, on the other hand, was all about wasted possibilities. Every time somebody got slugged with a ball, I hoped for an old-school beatdown. All those famous players of yesteryear - how many of 'em would walk away, instead of running up to that pitcher and rattling his dice with a louisville slugger? Great disappointment.

There are so many things that I just cannot even consider caring about. Some of those things I might maybe should be concerned with. I wonder if my depression about the futility of living and dying has become some really twisted and warped state of mind.

Probably.

I wouldn't say I'm particularly apathetic, I just channel my energy into one thing, and tend to ignore the rest of the world.

It comes off apathetic.

Ditto.  Except for the one thing part.  There are some things I care passionately about.  These are mostly things I can influence.  As for everything else, I actively avoid getting emotionally involved.  I'm too busy as it is.

I can relate to that.  I care, just not necessarily about the things that others say I'm supposed to care about.

I'm having a hard time making up my mind about ambivalence.

It was also known as ennui, the megrims, the blues, or the black dog. But whatever the name, the symptoms were always the same: listlessness, boredom, a sense that life was ultimately meaningless and futile, without point or purpose.

I do not suffer from any symptoms such as these...Except...that life is meaningless and futile.

I feel that we work so hard to get to a place that is good for us and then we up and die.

However, even the optimistic pessimist in me keeps fighting for me and my fellow man.

While working hard to reach that "place" you need to make a conscience effort to enjoy the journey of getting there.

When I first started backpacking I was very destination focused. I would strap on my pack, hit the trail and crank out miles focused on getting to the next campsite. Then I started bringing my camera along, I stopped at interesting overlooks longer to get a good shot. I became aware of wild flowers, birds, wildlife, all manner of flora and fauna all to get cool shots. I've found my backpacking trips are of much higher quality because I am much more aware of each moment as I absorb my surroundings. I no longer have the tunnel vision of being destination driven. The walk in the woods has become every bit as important as the campsite at the end of the day.

I used to get all motivated about becoming more apathetic but I don't seem to want to bother anymore.

Apathy is for people who don't care.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Have you read the book of Ecclesiastes?
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=ecc;&version=49;
This is how the first chapter starts:
Quote
What advantage does man have in all his work
         Which he does under the sun?
    A generation goes and a generation comes,
         But the earth remains forever.
    Also, the sun rises and the sun sets;
         And hastening to its place it rises there again.
    Blowing toward the south,
         Then turning toward the north,
         The wind continues swirling along;
         And on its circular courses the wind returns.
    All the rivers flow into the sea,
         Yet the sea is not full.
         To the place where the rivers flow,
         There they flow again.
    All things are wearisome;
         Man is not able to tell it.
         The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
         Nor is the ear filled with hearing.
    That which has been is that which will be,
         And that which has been done is that which will be done.
         So there is nothing new under the sun.
    Is there anything of which one might say,
         "See this, it is new"?
         Already it has existed for ages
         Which were before us.
    There is no remembrance of earlier things;
         And also of the later things which will occur,
         There will be for them no remembrance
         Among those who will come later still.
