How much paint?
« on: February 06, 2009, 03:42:53 PM »
I'm going to buy a shell for my truck.  Just gonna get a used white one since they want like $1300 to get a color matched one.

I've found a place to buy automotive paint and I've done body shop work a million years ago in high school... I'm sure I can paint a camper shell well enough to save $1000 on the cost differential on a new color matched one and a used white one.

But... how much paint do I need?  I'd hate to start with only 1 quart and realize I've got way too little, but I'd hate to order 3-4 quarts and realize I wasted a couple hundred dollars on auto paint that I won't even end up opening.

It's available in quarts and pints, as well as 11 ounce aerosol cans.  I'm guessing that I'll end up using about 1-1.5 quarts and that I'm probably safe with 2 quarts... but it's been forever since I've had to estimate how much paint I need.

I used 3 spray bombs of White Krylon Epoxy when I did my S-10 shortbox cap a few years ago.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.
Is defenestration possible through the overton window?

Also... I'm buying an HVLP sprayer attachment for my air compressor for this, so I'm not going to use spray cans.

This doesn't have to be "perfect", but I do want a more consistent pattern than you get out of a can of Krylon.

:-)

I've been scouring craigslist for weeks with no success, just found a used one, white, was on a 2005 ram shortbed just like my truck.  $20.

It needs a new rear window and the hydraulic shocks for it, but I should be able to get that for a lot less than the additional $280 I had budgeted.

Getting it tonight.

Check with your local body shops.  If you do the prep (scuff and tape) it will surprise you how little they will charge to shoot a job.

I'm a dumbass.

I bought the $20 camper shell with the broken rear window.  Got it home.  Started to unload it (alone) and put it in the garage.

Sliiiiiiiiiiide from the back of the truck.

Safety glass all over the floor.

Now I've got a broken rear window and a broken side window.  I have to replace two windows now.  Argh.  It may now not be worth it, I'm out $20, and the disposal fee of taking the damned thing to the dump.  Argh.

I need to call around and find replacement part costs from dealers... I can't seem to find any online.  Anyone know of a source for replacement windows for a Leer 100XL?

Plexiglass is easy to cut and shape.  Cheap stuff, too.

Does it tint well?
