Holster Opinions?
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:33:29 AM »
I got a new Colt Commander Lightweight about a week ago and I need a holster for it.

I've noticed that I have a hole in my carry line-up:  I don't have an easily removed holster.  This is important to me because I don't wear my pistol to karate class... I don't have anywhere to lock it up when in the changing room, and I obviously don't like the idea of it being accessible to dozens of little kids, stored in a gym bag.

My OWB holsters I currently have all have belt loops, so taking them off and putting them on is a PITA.

My IWB's require me to unfasten my belt, insert the holster, then re-fasten the belt.

I'm thinking that a paddle holster might be a good bet for what I'm looking for, but I've never tried one.

Fobus makes some... what do you guys think?  Does their Roto-Holster hold up over time?  Will it work with a Commander sized 1911 as well as Sig's slightly non-standard shape full size 1911?

Can anyone recommend a leather paddle holster, rather than one of the Fobus plastic ones?

(Not interested in the kydex Serpa with the button by the trigger to release it from the holster.)

I like Tucker Gunleather's system. http://rlcompanyusa.stores.yahoo.net/iwbholsters1.html

I use a http://rlcompanyusa.stores.yahoo.net/sithiw.html with my XD and it's been very secure for me.

I have a Comp-Tac Minotaur, which is similar to the Tucker Answer Balog posted. $80, but the quality is worth it. They also offer the C-TAC, which omits the leather backing. The Tucker is a fine holster, but I prefer Comp-Tac's clips, available in different styles and colors. I've worn a steel Para P-13 for 10+ hours comfortably, and the clips ease off the belt for quick removal.

Galco and Kramer make excellent paddle holsters, but I don't think you're gaining any comfort or access over a good VM2 style IWB.

I have K&D's Laredo Defender for my J-frame: http://www.kdholsters.com/owb-defend.php

It works well and goes on and off easily.  The leatherwork is sturdy and high quality.

I've got a CompTac MTAC and CTAC for my XD9 and my SP-101... I like these but they are bothersome for taking off/on.  Great all day carry though... I've got my CTAC and SP-101 on right now.

I need a convenient holster that goes on/off easily but still rides close and tight to the body for concealment.

Forgot to add:  I have that disease known as "Left Handed."  Whomever you recommend, they need to make a southpaw variant. =D

Comp-tac is very good. I have the leather-backed one by them, and it's very comfortable.

Paddle holster with the plastic thing? For me (and possibly for anyone slender) it feels like jamming a Playstation controller in your belt and trying to walk around. I can't do it.

K&D should be able to make what you need.  He's a small shop, but can modify his products to suit your needs.

Not the same as your gun, but the Laredo Defender holds my j-frame tight to my body and I can remove it quickly if I need to go somewhere I can't carry.  It's a touch fiddly getting it back on, but nothing I can't handle while in the car, for example.  It even holds well enough that I can draw the gun with the snaps unsnapped.  I did this once at the range, didn't realize it was unsnapped until the draw when things felt a little loose.  The holster still stayed in place and the gun was drawn as if nothing was wrong.

Oh, and to remove the holster and gun from the belt?  Just unsnap the two snaps and pull the entire kit and kaboodle straight up and off the belt.  Reinstalling it means sliding the unsnapped loops behind my belt and resnapping them (or resnapping them with holster off belt and reinstalling like a normal OWB holster).

I've got a Speedy Spanky from High Noon. Works great, and it's leather.

The only problem I had was the wait. It took forever to arrive. While I was waiting for it, I used a Fobus Roto. It held up fine. Still looks like new, actually.

This one has worked well for me as a removable option. I have one for my P-11 and one for my Glock 22 as well.

That K&D OWB snap rig is looking pretty nice... I think I may order one of those and a mag carrier from them tomorrow.  Thanks, guys.

You could give Erik a call at Sideguard Holsters. He's in the Minneapolis area.

I own his "Snap" model for a Ruger SP-101 and a pocket holster for the same. The Snap is just what it sounds like.

Well, no, you wouldn't win if Chuck Norris showed up, naturally.  But Chuck might do you the honor of round-housing that gun into your forehead.  And that would be AWESOME!!!!1111

I use a Milt Sparks Summer Special, both for my 5" Norinco/Kart 1911 and 3.5" Caspian Officer's ACP.  They're IWB, but have snaps on their belt loops...

I've used Kydex in the past and it served me well.  I've since gone to quality leather for all of my pistols.  I carry my Kimber Pro Carry in a Galco Royal Guard IWB and a Galco Fletch High Ride for belt carry.  Both are left handed.

For the XD-45 I carry it in a Desanti's Inner Piece and a Galco Fletch High Ride.  Again, both left handed.  The Inner piece is by far my favorite inner waist band holster.  I'll be buying one of these for every carry piece from here on out.  I like it better than the Galco Royal Guard that my Kimber rides in.

These probably won't help you much as your looking for a holster that will remove and reinstall pretty easy.  If I had to chose one that would serve that purpose I'd look at Comp-Tac Undercover.  I've used them in the past and they are a fine holster
