Noob question on Blu-Ray
« on: February 25, 2010, 06:07:38 PM »

A while ago I bought a Sony Blu-Ray player and have been slowly acquiring Blu-Ray discs.  On about half of them, the "resume" feature does not work: pressing Stop and then Play causes the movie to restart from the beginning, which is annoying.  Other than the lack of resume capability, the discs play just fine.

Have any of you experienced this?  Does this indicate my player needs a firmware upgrade?  Thanks.

You're on the right track.

Rule #1 with Blu-Ray is kinda like rule number one with computers... update your drivers (or firmware in this case).  Depending on how old your player is, and whether or not it's BD 1.0 or BD 2.0 compliant, discs can exhibit all kinds of funky behaviors if the player isn't kept updated.

What Brad said.

Blu-Ray is not a firm, mature, fully standardized technology yet . . . they're still monkeying with refining it.

(It usually works.)

Just wait.  BD3D is in the works for a spring/summer roll out.  It was all the rage at CES.  Think you have issues now?  Just wait...

At least you bought a Sony, that is a good move. I went with Samsung for my blu ray. Cheaper. Yep got what I paid for. Even with the firmware updated, some disks work, some don't. But hey. When it works, it's a pretty picture.

I was going to replace it with a Sony. After reading this I'll wait.

I've been happy with my Samsung Bluray player, hasn't been a disc yet it didn't like. When I was researching before I bought, I found as many complaints about the Sonys as I did about the Samsungs. I think both brands vary widely in # of problems by model.

I've decided I hate blu-ray.

I've got a Samsung and I ran into an issue with "Wanted" the other day:  This stupid window in the corner came up at the start of the movie that said "BONUSVIEW."  I didn't want to know about the stupid additional disk-extras while I'm just trying to watch a stinking movie.

I spent 20 minutes fiddling with the remote and RTFM-ing to figure out how to get rid of the window in the corner, then jumped on the innernetz.  Finally found out I had to STOP THE DAMN DISK and enter the machine's setup interface to permanently disable it.

Srsly: BONUSVIEW in huge letters in the corner?

Why not a small, unobtrusive dot or single letter in the corner?  that disappears after a couple seconds?  And why isn't this documented in the manual?

Grr.  Argh.  Stupid audio/videophiles.  And the idea of a BD3D coming out just irks me more.  VHS was around for about 20 years.  DVD had 10.  Is blue-ray gonna get 5?

No wonder people bootleg videos.
