whats the going rate for them? i've got an offer with free system and install. but the monthly seems high and i haven't even seen the "extras " i know they wanna sell yet. its a system that i don't need a land line for.  they want 40 something a month

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

$40 isn't bad for a monitored system.  Broken down further, what they are doing is charging you somewhere in the neighborhood of $23-25 per month for monitoring.  The rest of the $40 is the cost of equipment and installation spread over the 2/3 year contract period.

Is it ADT? I'm happy with them x 1 year. Think twice about depending only on cell phone. I have Landline plus cellular backup. Don't scrimp on security.

my deal is that i can wire the house myself and have it call me the wife and kid as well as a few other folks and do it for about what 2 years of monitoring cost

Then you can save a couple bucks by buying and installing your own system. Contract for the monitoring service.

The downside  - if something happens to the system it's your problem.  If something happens and the system doesn't notify the monitoring service, it's your problem.  If the system throws a bunch of spurious warnings resulting in false notifications, it's your problem.
