Breeding a Dog
« on: November 16, 2005, 04:12:50 AM »
I have been mulling over getting another dog once my wife and I move to NC next year for guarding, protection, etc.   After careful consideration I have decided on a female German Shepherd for a variety of reasons.  I spoke to a shooting buddy of mine that has a male German Shepherd that is from a European bloodline, OFA(hips, etc.) certified, AKC, and placed in a couple of shows.  He has offered to let me have his pick of the litter if I can find a suitable female to breed with.  A very generous offer as justifying the money for a new dog is hard to do right now.  The only problem is that I have no idea where to begin looking for someone that has a dog to breed him with.  I am planning to call my vet who is a good friend of the family but that's about all I have.  Anyone know anything about breeding dogs and could you maybe steer me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Greg

Google search?

I'm sure there are discussion groups out there on this very topic.  I'll bet there are a bunch of dog clubs in South Florida.  Of course, those are probably for those little yippy rat-dogs.

On another topic... since you're moving north and I'm considering moving south to the FLL area, have you listed your house yet?  Got a link? Cheesy

Well, animal husbandry is just fine, if you don't get caught at it...

Sorry.  Couldn't resist.  Just another character flaw.

Fly320s,

We aren't planning on listing until about the middle of May.  If you need some ideas on where to live, etc. shoot me a PM or e-mail.  Not knocking you but I cannot see a reason other than a really good paying job to move here right now.  Real estate is way overinflated and you run the risk of losing money on any property you buy, especially if you wait much longer.  If I were doing it again right now (came from TX in 2000 but didn't buy), I'd rent for a while and see if the housing market starts to fall.  Coming from TN will be a huge culture shock...it was for me.

Greg,

Take a look at the yahoo groups, no doubt there are several oriented toward GSDs.  If you don't already have a Yahoo account, you will need to sign up for one (free) to get group mail traffic.

http://groups.yahoo.com/ is the home page, there were 205 hits when I searched it.  The largest group I saw was http://groups.yahoo.com/group/German_Shepherd_Dogs/ .  I found one that was FL specific at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FloridaGermanShepherds/ , it is smaller and less active tho:

Lee,

Thanks.  I'll check into it.  We are heading to the Raleigh area, probably Apex or Holly Springs.  BIL/SIL lives in Cary and my wife wants to live nearby.  Now I just need to secure a job up there.

I used to be into breeding dogs when I was in my 20's.  But it was usually done after about 2:30 in the AM and involved a lot of beer.  Tongue
