I just want a *&^%$#@* SERVER!
« on: March 10, 2009, 04:53:07 PM »

All I want to do is build a cheap-arse Wintel NAS.

Dealing with Dell and HP's websites is like dealing with car salesmen. It's all bait and switch, and purposely confusing option packages.

They make it IMPOSSIBLE to configure it without drives, but still get a RAID controller, because there's no freaking way we're going to pay $540 for 1TB SATA's when I can get enterprise-quality 1TB high RPM Seagate Barracuda's from Newegg for $149 ea. I was even willing to pay their pound of flesh and get a 160gb minimum HDD we'd promptly toss, but no, it won't even let you checkout the order.

Sigh... unless someone comes up with some genius-cheap product, I'm going to have to run the India gauntlet in the vain hope one of the cube-farmed can override the website's options and give us just what we want...
I promise not to duck.

 =D

Sigh.  I hate Dell's website.  You can take 3 different people in your office, tell them to spec out a 1U Poweredge server with exactly "X" components in it, and get 3 wildly different prices based upon God only knows what.

Flush your cookies and start over.  Maybe you'll hit the jackpot a second time.  Also, if you went small business the first time, go corporate and government this time.
"But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist."

You're going to the wrong places.

If it came to me, I'd go to our whitebox vendor, and spec out whatever you wanted, exactly as you wanted.  Server chassis, with Intel server board.  No OS, no problem.  Our rep is feeling insecure right now, and would do whatever it takes that didn't actually lose money.

Or, I betcha I could spec out something more to your liking from Dell's reseller site (where Joe the pale skinned gamer and Suzy Hausfrau can't go).

Roll your own Windows Home Server.  Microsoft got a product right for once.  It doesn't require a lot of snazzy hardware, and offers nice RAID-like redundancy on a multiple disk setup.  I've been running one for a year now.  Very easy to administer.
Up to ten PCs can be attached to it; full backup (even restorable disk images if you want) from each PC.  Video and audio streaming, lots of neat free and low cost add-ons available from third parties.  Remote, secure access is possible.
Keep in mind, it is not meant to be a server on the edge of your net, you can't run websites or game servers or such with it.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Want me to call up my vendor reps?  If you don't want to go generic and want Dell/HP, I'm sure they can help ya out.
"Rev, your picture is in my King James Bible, where Paul talks about "inventors of evil."  Yes, I know you'll take that as a compliment."  - Fistful, possibly highest compliment I've ever received.

Looked interesting to me, I've been considering getting a NAS for some time, but your whitebox site doesn't want to let me go anywhere without a login.
