Thermal carafe coffe makers... tell me about yours...
« on: May 19, 2009, 07:43:36 AM »
I'm in the market for a new coffee maker. Programmable, thermal carafe.

The one I have is very basic, pretty old, and getting a bit on the ratchety side. That said, it still works, but I want a back up in place before I'm left without coffee some dark morning.

Cuisinart? Bunn? Black & Decker? DeLonghi? Mr. Coffee?

Too many choices, but looking at Amazon's ratings they all seem to make coffee rather competently. The prices are, of course, all over the place.

Starbucks.  Let the pros do it.  They're the only ones professional enough to make coffee.

My housemate has one, unfortunately I can't think of the name (because I can't actually pronounce it), that keeps coffee hot ALL DAY.  I mean literally, ALL DAY.  It's the most amazing thing.  Not sure if it's actually programmable, though.
Oh, Lord, please let me be as sanctimonious and self-righteous as those around me, so that I may fit in.

Cuisinart?

Got that one. I can make coffee at 3:30am fill up my travel mug and briefcase thermos, come back around noonish from a morning goose hunt and the coffee in the carafe is still hot.

Get a Keurig.  Makes coffee one cup at a time.  Machine is pricey and the individual cup containers are also pricey and hard to find in stores.  We order our favorites from 11th St. Coffee in bulk on the 'net.

Anywho, you get a fresh cup each time.  Your joe is fresh any time of the day.  I've discovered that you can get two cups, one full and one medium out of one of the coffee container cups.  I didn't think I'd like it, but I do.

The coffee snobs, of whom I am one, feel that a brewer needs to get to 195-205 degree brewing temperatures for the best flavor.  The Zojirushi and the Capresso MT500 get consistently good reviews but are expensive.  I have the Capresso.

Matt G..  in his Better And Better blog, had much to say about a high end coffee maker some time back.  Might be worth a search. I'll stick to my double walled stainless French press, thank you very much.
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

"Makes coffee one cup at a time."

That's not satisfactory.

I take a thermos of coffee to the office every morning.

I don't want to have to make 8 cups of coffee just to fill my thermos.

More information than you'd probably need, tons of reviews etc.

Brew station would require my filling a cup and then filling my thermos. Not enough clearance, too much hassle.

I fill all mine without any problem. It helps to have it sitting far enough forward on the counter where you can hold the thermos at about a 30-degree angle to the spout.

OK, that's a good point. I'll add the brew station back into the selection list.

Admittedly, it's not first on my list, as the brew station is a continuous reheat model and I'm one who can taste the downward spiral of coffee as it oxidizes on the heat.

Then again, with my buying a new gun a few minutes ago, I may have to get the old one to soldier on for awhile longer.

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

We have an older Hamilton Beach thermal.   We only picked it up because it was a demo model half off at a home depot. I think we paid 30 bucks for it. That was about 3 years ago.  It was the first thermal maker we had used.. we'll never go back to a hot plate.  I don't care about programmable because I grind (Cuisinart burr grinder)the moment before I brew.  I am however looking to buy a new one too.  The plastic on the inside of the lid that sits over the brew area is bubbling up, and it's just a bit too small at an 8 cup capacity (4 real world cups)  I think a 12cup (6real world cups) will be a minimum.
I'm actually interested in finding a hardlined maker so I don't have to fill it at all I just want to grind then brew.
Oh and as far as the grind and brew in one varieties.  My brother and his wife have one.. he says he's not a big fan of it because it requires too much cleaning to keep it pure.
Just my nickels(have to adjust for inflation you know) worth.

I have a Krupps that does fine.  Coffee is hot for ~ 3-4 hours.  Programmable.

Drifting back to Mike's new S&W, I guess I'm going to have to revise my estimate of my net worth.  While I have no doubt His Honor is a fine judge of a good deal on a great handgun, I just can't comprehend the new pricing paradigm.

Of course (drifting further), 1k 115gr FMJ bullets now cost within a buck of what I was paying for 1k of Blazer 9mm ammo.  I've got to develop better mental agility...

"I just can't comprehend the new pricing paradigm."

It's called capitalism.

As demand for a product rises, the price also rises.

Except when it comes to gasoline. Then it's just psychotic. :D

I have a Krupps coffee maker..and an Aladdin thermos that's at least 30 years old.  I preheat the thermos with hot water while i get ready in the morning, then pour the coffee in when i leave.  The coffee's still hot 10 hours later.  low tech, but effective..

That's pretty much what I do now. But, the problem is, I get up around 5:30-6, and have the coffee maker set for then so I can have a cup when I let Mason out.

Then I normally go back to bed for awhile. By the time I get up and ready to go again, the coffee's been on the burner for a couple of hours, is going stale, and the heater might actually have kicked off and it's cooling.
