S&W snubby find -and a couple of questions
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:38:28 PM »
Damn...I went into the local shop to see if they had any used .22 rifles, and walked out with a 642SS, no dash, air weight, J frame.
1) Do you know if this model was the PRE +P model?
2) There is a shiny spot on top of the hammer shroud- Is this the infamous wearing off of clear coat?

Call S&W. Give the S/N and ask - that's the only real way to be sure.

Did you get the model with the fully enclosed hammer?

If ya did  =D ya should'a got the 638 and that wouldn't have been a problem and you could cock the thing manually and fire single action if you wanted to. Now don't you feel foolish?

Yes...they only had one used S&W snubby for $300.  I think I own more DA guns than not these days...so it works for me.

I've got both  (638 and 642).  Don't get attached to the factory clear coat if you plan on using it for anything more than a safe queen...

This was purchased as a throw- in -the -pocket user.  I've owned several really nice safe queens.  The price and minor wear on this one were really what kinda appealed to me. Someone else lived through the ding-up grief.

Lookin' for something similar,  myself. Don't have to be pretty, just reliable, and reasonably light. (i.e. lighter than a SP-101!!). Actually need 2; BIL is loking for his first gun!

Stay safe.
