My boot hurts
« on: July 02, 2009, 04:07:33 PM »
This is annoying...  after my last couple of hikes one of my toes on my left foot was really hurting.  I thought it was just a hot spot and needed to suck it up and toughen my feet up at first but it kept getting worse as I wore the boots.  I finally felt around inside the boot and found a protrusion that jabs that toe.  It is not just a small bump, it is a sort of a crease in the liner going from the top front of the toe cup down the front of the boot ending just above the insole.  I don't know if something shrank or what.  It wasn't there a month ago.

The boots have a rubberized toe cup over the top of the goretex/leather main boot.  The boots are 5+ years old with some hard use but other than this new issue there is nothing wrong with them.

Any ideas to get rid of this?

5+ years and they are now creased and losing support.... time to get new ones.

It sucks, I just went through it with a much beloved pair of Vasques.

I used to get blisters and stuff 'back in the day', but these days my feet are so rough and solid I wear boots out before they wear me out. I'm nearing the end of my third pair of safety boots at my current job.

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

Use a dremel on your toe.  =D

Consider taking it to one of the many boot repair shops, and see what they say. It's possible you could soak the area in question with Lexol or similar and flatten it out. Or use sandpaper.

Any day you power up your Dremel tool can't be all bad.

Or use your Dremel tool to give yourself a lobotomy so you can't feel the pain.  =D

A good, comfortable pair of boots can be hard to find. That's why we become attached to them and dread shopping for new ones. Plus, going shopping for clothes is boring as hell. Try a pair one, take it off, repeat, repeat, repeat. Put old shoes back on, go to different store, repeat. Boring as hell.

Bah. Comfort is relative and comes with time, anyway. I just buy boots that are, in some way, different from the ones I have. Usually taller. Or a different color. Diversity is the spice of life. Not that I like any diversity or spices when it comes to food, but for other areas, yes.
One buys 'em for more than just the aesthetics of the boot itself. Different boots change the way you walk, thus affecting other people's perceptions of you. This difference is seen in the comparison of sandals versus shoes versus combat boots versus knee-high boots. I dare you to walk grandiosely in a pair of flip-flops.
And at the end of the scale, there are wading/Zardoz boots. If you plan on wading rivers or raising a high level of WTFery, they are unsurpassed. One should take care if interviewing Sean Connery while wearing them. It could evoke painful memories.
