Flat Screen TV
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:59:18 PM »
Hey y'all ... does anybody have any expertise in TV repair ?  I have a 2 yr old Magnavox 37" LCD HDTV that worked beautifully til the other day when it turned itself off moments after being turned on and refuses to start again ... I assume it's solid state ... are solid state TV's fixable or are they one big part and fixing it is as costly as new ?  I can replace it for about $650 ... will I be better off getting a new one or should I begin the repairman hustle ... I've tried uplugging it for a couple hours and then replugging it in but surprisingly that did not fix it ...  :|

Thanks ...

Chester

Fuse.  Search the internet and see if there is a replaceable fuse for it.

Look for a small reset button on the back of the set.

My Toshiba started doing that.

14 months old.

$1,000 estimated repair cost for a TV now selling on the open market for $800.

I now have a Samsung.

Products are cheap, services are expensive.  If you can't fix consumer electronics yourself, you're almost always better off replacing it.  It's an interesting side effect of cheap labor in other countries used to produce products.

I mean this in full seriousness: now's your chance to wean yourself from the idiot box. Throw it out. Do without. Read to your mind.

It's only the idiot box if you ALLOW it to become the idiot box by your viewing habits.

There are a huge number of viable, educational shows on the airways.

It always struck me how a friend's Mother always complained bitterly about the idiot box and extolled reading as the only virtuous activity to enhance one's mind...

Problem is, the ONLY thing she read was romance novels, the crappier the better. I told him that he should get a free 'no nag' on the Drew Carey show for that. :)

UPDATE

Well I opted to just buy a new 42" Sanyo for $650 ... I figured I didn't like rushing into any repair decisions about something I know nothing about ... But I'd like to try to fix the old TV w/o breaking the bank ... do any of y'all have any recomendations ...

Check something like Craig's List. A friend of mine has a 42 inch plasma that went dead like yours. Best Buy wanted a lot of cash just to look at it. He found a local guy on Craig's List that fixed it for $125.

It just needed one of those small cooling fans. It works great again.
