Are there any states that _aren't_ broke?
« on: July 30, 2009, 04:33:32 PM »
http://www.azcentral.com/news/election/azelections/articles/2009/07/29/20090729assets0729.html

Arizona plans to sell their government buildings and lease them back until they can afford to buy them back. When I play Monopoly, this is usually the point right before the point that I lose.

What if they can't afford to buy them back and their lease runs out? Who wants to bet on the likelyhood that the loan-holder could legitimately foreclose and evict them?

We had looney Napolitano that loved her school and social programs, followed now by Jan Brewer, who is supposedly a Republican.

Working with a Republican legislature.

And she won't cut a damned thing!

I'm personally hoping for a goobermint shut-down like the Fed one under Clinton.  We'll all see just how worthless government is, and save a few hundred million over the 2-3 weeks that they can't agree on a budget.

Michigan is less broke than California.  That's about as good as it gets around here.   =|

But a friend of mine just found a job today.  Dunno what yet; suspect it's not ezackly a tenure-track position in her field (just finished a phd in archaeology), but around here 'most any job is good these days.

Arizona is pawning their buildings?  Bwahaha!  That's awesome.  Wow, that's such a bad idea it's not even funny.  I'm just entertained that States aren't doing the logical thing and cutting their expenditures.  Makes too much sense, I suppose.

Heh, There's a new show on NBC, "Parks and Recreation". There's only been a few episodes and it's kinda hit or miss, but I love the boss. He's a government worker who hates the government.

In the series pilot he talks about the best thing a government office doing is nothing, and that if he had his way, he would, "...sell the government to a corporation. Like Chucky Cheese. Now they have a good business model. I would love to work for Chucky Cheese."

I think we should form APS LLC and buy the buildings and leese 'em back.  Goobermint needs cash so we buy cheap and rent back high till we recover our cash then sell the buildings to the Federal goobermint for thrice their inflated value.

And put a clause in the leasing contract that opens the buildings to CCW and an indoor range.

Utah actually has a balanced budget. It's in the state constitution, so lawmakers are unable to spend more than they take in without amending the constitution. If only that were in the COTUS.

this just in:

WASHINGTON –– The U.S. House will vote on $2 billion in additional funding for the cash-for-clunkers program this afternoon.

Michigan lawmakers huddled in the Capitol this morning with a White House official discussing ways to get the cash-for-clunkers program under control. The program is still under way, they said.

While the Obama administration said the plan was not suspended, it doesn't know how many deals have been made under the program and whether the $950 million available to the plan is enough to cover the deals already made.

The administration may consider whether money from the economic stimulus plan can be diverted to the program.

In addition to Michigan lawmakers, today's meeting includes Brian Deese, a member of Obama's auto task force.

The Associated Press reported that Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., said he was assured by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood that the program, which provides an incentive of $3,500-$4,500 to trade in fuel-inefficient vehicles, will be good at least through today.

Levin said that the program's fate beyond today “depends on whether the administration can find some money.”

Indeed.  Brewer has been an enormous disappointment since day one.
