Where do you buy your optics?
« on: July 15, 2009, 07:39:51 PM »
Looking to get a scope for this hunting season, and just wondering where you all get your stuff. I'll most likely be getting one of the low end Leupolds.

+1. I bought a little 3-9x40 Leupold for my .22 there several years ago. I was happy with them.

I'm getting a Leupold 2nd hand next month, VXII 4-14x40 AO. I'm getting it from one my friends dad, he is wanting to up grade to a 6-18x50 AO for dog hunting.

If you are set on Leupold start checking ebay, gun broker, etc.

I wouldn't say I'm "set" on Leupold; they just seem a good choice. Any other thoughts on something in the 1x4 range?

Wal-mart.

:D  Someone had to say it.

Wait, I actually did buy a scope from a Wal-mart once.  It was one of the made in Japan Redfields that I stuck on a .22.  It's been a damn good scope.

Other than that, no place in particular.

I haven't purchased from SWFA, but they seem to have a lot of good stuff.

Another vote for SWFA.  If you dont mind used, look for their Sample List. I think that is the name. Good deals on trade in scopes.

I've bought one of their Vortex scopes and I'm pleased with it.  They also carry Leopold stuff too though.

The problem with SWFA is that they're in Texas, so if I order from them I get nicked for 8.25% sales tax.

I've bought 'scopes from Gander Mountain (back when they had a mail-order business), MVP.COM (now defunct), and OpticsPlanet.com. Right now, I'm looking at an Eotech sight from OpticsPlanet, but I'm waiting for them to send me one of their periodic email coupons, which are typically 5% off.

I have high regard for Leupold 'scopes - in fact, all my centerfire 'scopes are Leupolds. I started with a Leupold Vari-X II 3x9 on a .30/06 hunting rifle my Dad bought me in the early '70s, when I was too young to buy it myself . . . since then I've hunted stateside and on three African safaris with it, and even though the barrel is starting to show signs of wear, the 'scope is still going strong.

I used to be a member of a gun club that opened to the public a couple of weeks before deer season, and when I was working as a range safety officer I saw a LOT of rifles and 'scopes come through the range - I saw what worked, and what didn't. By and large, all the "big name" 'scopes were OK, including Weaver, Redfield, Burris, Bushnell, Leupold, and European makes like Zeiss, Swarovski, etc. (Although I will note that many of the Euroscopes, despite their high prices, seemed to have a problem with glare if a bright light source was just outside the field of view.)

Conversely, I also DID see which equipment was prone to be troublesome, which is why I'll never buy a Remington 7-series autoloading rifle or a 'scope from Tasco.

Plainfield Shooting Supply?  I don't know about "small"; Bob moves a lot of guns.

I usually buy mine from my gunsmith as I usually have to get them from the factory as I put the target towers on my optics.

I buy my ACOGs from my machine gun dealer.

I'll also recommend SWFA for non-Texans.  =( I've got two Leupolds, a Vari-X III 6.5x20x50 and a VX-II 3x9x40, both have been faultless. The latter sustained a 12' fall and retained zero.

I was thinking physically.  That place is fairly small and cramped in that respect.

But yea, Bob is a good salesman with excellent prices for repeat customers.  He's certainly made my checking account a few thousand lighter in the past 10 years.

Plainfield Shooting Supply is large for a gun store.  His use of space is . . . less than optimal (e.g., those red Winchester stools on the end of aisles for guys who hate their wives to sit on and talk about 450 yard shots on crows and bitching about Obama).

Come on, it's a gun store.  What do you expect, Nick?  Ever been to Bradis or Elmore's? =D

Bradis, yes.  (Picked up a few goodies there)  It's much larger then Bob's.  =)

Elmore's, haven't been.

Well it might not help you much, but I'll answer you question.
I used to work across the hi-way from Bushnell. I got some great deals and was able to have everything checked by one of the repair guys before buying it if I had a question about it.
The last three scope I bought and the last two my brother bought came from there.
I have no complaints at all.
It might make a small difference that I'm not a turrent cranker. I sight it in and leave it alone. I hold for windage or yardage when needed.

I mounted a 3-9X40 Nikon Buckmaster on a Win M-70 in .300 Win Mag last night. Once my sunburn on my upper body is healed I'm going to get sighted in.

I'm pretty impressed with the scope so far, cost me $159 (free shipping) off of ebay from a guy who seems to sell a lot of new optics, with a 100% feedback. Retail the scope is around $230 so I saved some coin.

I have that 4.5-14x40SF version of that scope on my Remington 700 SPS.  It has the bullet drop compensator on it, which is probably the only thing about the scope I don't like.  I find myself wishing I had gone with the regular nikoplex reticule.

Other than that, it's a pretty good scope.  Consistant adjustments, holds zero well, etc.

I talked to a lot of shooters/hunters about duplex vs a BDC, I ended up going with the Nikoplex because who knows how my handloads will match up with a factory calibrated BDC.

I'm just going to sight in for center at 200 yards and learn to dope for 100 yards and 300 yards on game sized animals.
