Now that's just funny.  Milk prices too low?  Dump a million gallons of milk onto a field.  That'll learn 'em!

BRUSSELS (AFP) – European dairy farmers poured three million litres (800,000 gallons) of milk into a Belgian field on Wednesday in a bid to highlight their desperation over falling prices.

The stunt, in southern Wallonia region, came as a campaign group, Via Campesina, said at least three milk farmers have committed suicide in France over the past week while more than 40,000 producers have stopped supplying milk.

"Desperation is pushing more and more producers to join the movement," European Milk Board chief Romuald Schaber told a press conference, adding that politicians "must act at once" to address the plight of 100,000 farmers.

Dairy product prices have collapsed due to low demand caused by the financial and economic crisis. Since 2007, milk prices have in some countries more than halved, according to Schaber, whose organisation represents about a third of European milk producers.

Demonstrations have been held in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.

The action comes after European Union farm ministers could not agree aid package for the sector during a Brussels meeting on September 7.

In November, EU agriculture ministers agreed to lift milk production quotas by one percent per year before scrapping them for 2014-2015.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, has agreed to introduce limited aid but has refused to go back on its decision to scrap the quota system.

Milk prices are doing the same thing here in the US.

I remember hearing a story about how lots of dairy farmers were sending off milk cows to the butcher stockyards in order to reduce supply.

I'm buying gallon jugs over the last several weeks, whereas I used to buy 1/2 gallon each week.  And it costs me less.

I just wish that ICE CREAM prices would come down.  I'm a sucker for having ice cream in the fridge, but that stuff just seems to keep spiraling rather than dropping.

Maybe I'll just get an ice cream maker, instead.

See, in Israel, that wouldn't have happened. The government prohibits production of milk over a certain amount, as well as centrally setting milk prices.

farmers have been dumping milk for eons - sometimes to prevent prices from dropping too low, sometimes to protest the gooberment setting the price too high, and sometimes because it was a day ending in 'y'.

it's when they start selling off the herd that i get concerned.  meat takes a quick dip and then resets higher than before, and milk is higher, too.  that means everybody else raises prices to stay even.

couldn't we dump farmers instead.  oops - my bad.  been doing that since way back.

so how about we introduce the europeans to soy milk.  that ought to get them excited.

That was my first thought.  Heck, wasn't the point of inventing cheese in the first place to store excess milk?
