Any Old Coin Gurus?
« on: September 26, 2009, 05:03:28 PM »
Found this today while doing a deep cleaning on a closet.  It must've come with the house, as I've never seen anything like it before.

Obverse

Reverse

Size comparison to a quarter (duh)

What is it? ???

Well, at least you can bracket that British coin to the timeframe of King George V, circa WWI.  ;)

It's a British half silver half copper coin (can't tell if it's a penny, twopence or threepence) from between 1911 and 1927.

"George V, by the Grace of God, of all the Britains King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India."

EDIT: Upon doing some quick looking through World Coins, I'm guessing it's a threepence. It's about 16mm in diameter (~.64"), to check that simply see if it goes from George Washington's head to the base of his neck - the length of the entire bust on the US Quarter you have there is about .64" as well.  =)

Just below the crown on the reverse is the number 10... so 10 pence?

No such coin, as 12d (pence) was 1s (shilling) during George V's reign. 1d, 2d, 3d, 4d were all common.

That's fine, but... there aren't ten pence coins from George V's reign.

I think I found it...

Given its extremely poor condition, I guess it's just worth its silver.

I still think it's cool, though.  =)  Going into my random collection, for certain.

  No problem.

Something I learned from all this, though: finding a picture online of a coin from the early 20th century will take a couple hours.  =(

Had I included Canada, it would've taken all of five minutes. Again, my apologies.  :|
