Golfer loses arm during a game

Jeez, I didn't know they had alligators on golf courses??!

http://golf.fanhouse.com/2009/10/09/south-carolina-golfer-meets-alligator-becomes-real-life-chubbs/?icid=main|htmlws-main|dl1|link5|http%3A%2F%2Fgolf.fanhouse.com%2F2009%2F10%2F09%2Fsouth-carolina-golfer-meets-alligator-becomes-real-life-chubbs%2F#

Why would they have them there in the first place?  Can't the golf courses get rid of them?

Golf courses are like parks, wildlife just moves in.  If you have waterholes in Florida of any size, you're gonna have gators.  Especially if you design the course to use existing natural features.

Fish and wildlife rules apply, you can't hunt or harass wildlife except under limited circumstances, even in golf courses and parks.

SC coast is a golfer heaven.  The place is infested with alligators.  A year or so ago a golfer on Hilton Head was packin' a .357 which he needed to deal with a gator.  They're an annoyance to golfers and really rough on dogs and cats.

That's gonna leave a mark.

This ^^^.

Assume they are in every body of fresh water in FL.

In parks, there will be warnings.  Makes an outing in the park with a toddler a bit stressful.

I'm not a golfer, so I had no idea.  Wow, more of a dangerous sport than I thought!  He should have hit the thing with his club

Chrissy, you should have seen the moaning and teeth gnashing that went on when somebody dumped a few gators in our pond at work...

South Carolina DNR (state wildlife agency) will remove them, but not if they are under 6 feet. So we payed several thousand dollars to a professional trapper to remove them (I offered to take care of them for free). Beaufort, SC has a good many gators in the area, so seeking out a water hazard is not suprising to me at all.

This is all new to me.  I live in New York.  We have to watch out for Taxi Cabs, not gators, lol.

Taxicabs and really crowded cities scare me more than gators...I grew up in the woods and on the water in SC...including running a shallow draft boat up the inlets and such at night flounder gigging, right in the gator infested areas. Breaking down out there is real fun.

Sounds like a good reason to throw a little H&R single-shot shotgun into the golf bag.  :-)

The naval base golf course in Orlando was FAMOUS (locally) for having a rather sizable gator in one of the water hazards.  I never took up the game, but the word was, if your ball went in the water, you did NOT try to get it back (it was an actual standing order on the base not to recover the ball!).  And anyone who did would not be covered for medical care, if they made it out alive (violation of aforementioned order).  Don't know if the latter part was true, but the former definitely was, and I did actually see the gator once.

I didn't know any of this about golfing.  Wow, you learn something new every day!  I only go to Disney when I'm in Florida, and I've never seen any alligators in any of their hotels - even the cheap All Star ones I use, lol.

I guess it's a matter of preference - what is important to you and how much you want to spend.  I stayed in the cheaper All-Star hotels (All Star Sport, All Star Movies, and All Star Music) and asked for a preferred room and that worked out great (preferred is near the food building and near the place where you catch the buses).  I then stayed at a more expensive hotel that Disney had (I think it was the Carribbean Beach), and you had to walk a LOT more to get to everything, and the rooms were about the same size.  For me, the extra money wasn't worth it, but others swear by the more expensive hotels.  One of the other higher-priced ones might be better than the Carribbean, but I'll never stay in that one again.  May try one of the other higher end ones in the future, though.
