MEXICO CITY – The United States should reinstate a Clinton-era ban on assault weapons to prevent such guns from reaching Mexican drug cartels, former officials from both countries said in a report released Tuesday.

The group, which includes two former U.S. ambassadors to Mexico, also said the U.S. should do more to stop the smuggling of firearms and ammunition into Mexico by stepping up investigations of gun dealers and more strictly regulating gun shows.

The Binational Task Force on the United States-Mexico Border listed the assault weapons ban as a step the U.S. should take immediately to improve security in both countries. The 10-year ban expired in 2004.

It's for the children! Mexican Government.

They're still pushing this excrement?  I thought they had stopped after they got caught fudging their facts a few months ago...and no significant support showed up in congress.

The group, which includes two former U.S. ambassadors to Mexico . . .
Does this also include the US ambassador who "went native" by marrying one of the richest women in Mexico, who inherited the Corona brewery?

I propose we do the same type of thing to stop the southward flow of guns as THEY are doing to stop the northward flow of Mexicans., i.e., put out brochures on how to smuggle guns south, distribute maps on the best southbound arms smuggling routes, and provide advice and counsel on how to deal with Federales who haven't been bought off yet. Maybe we can even use a few small units of the US Military to start sniping at Mexican border agents who get too nosy, the same way the Mexicans have been sniping at our people.

Sure, they have nothing else to go on.

Mexico is beyond a basket case, much easier to blame America first, last and always.

I agree, we should stop selling firearms to the Mexican government and military.

I agree.  The border is too porous.

I contend that we need to land mine it.

Should say:

The group, which includes two former U.S. ambassadors to Mexico, also said the U.S. should do more to stop the smuggling of firearms and ammunition into Mexico by aggressively patrolling the porous southern border.  This tactic demonstrates intent to maintain respectful treatment of Americans who peaceably assemble for lawful purposes at gun shows.

How is this even plausible?  Why would Mexican drug cartels buy semi-auto AR-15s in onesies and twosies at full retail in the U.S. when they can get full-auto AKs on the black market for whole sale prices?  Or steal stuff from the corrupt Mexican government.  I would assume the average Mexican drug lord is at least as smart as I am.

Don't most of the guns used by cartels come from the Mexican military?  Heck, don't most of the gunmen used by the cartels come from the Mexican military?

So they wait a few months and start it up again. Opposition is out of focus and the bliss ninnys probably don't remember hearing about it in the first place.

yeah,I love it when they have these articles.  Usually they'll have a photo from a recent bust clearly showing .30 cal machine guns, G3's and other stuff that I would LOVE to be able to buy at a gun show.  Unfortunately they are full of doo doo and hardly any of the guns come from America.
