Unexpected and expensive lunch item
« on: October 23, 2009, 08:50:19 PM »
I was reading the latest American Rifleman the other night and they had a pic of an older S&W revolver in there that caught my eye. So,  today I stopped by a local gun shop over lunch just to see if anyone might have recently traded in a nice older S&W revolver.  Low and behold, this one had just come in for consignment yesterday.   I couldn't resist, and came home with this Model 581- no dash.  Talk about an unplanned, non-budgeted, impulse buy. I was trying to look it up in the Supica Book- and oddly the serial number is AAA28XX. The book says they started in '81 with an AAD prefix...that there was a rumor of one with a AAC prefix.  I'm happy.  Hopefully this link will work work a pic

That is a nice addition to anyone's collection. A lot of the S&W 581's were police guns, carried a lot, shot little. Because of that there are quite a few DAO ones out there, is yours DAO?

There was also a recall on the 581's to replace the firing pin and firing pin bushings. To find out is it has had the recall work done on it look at the area of the crane where the model number is. If it has been done there will be an "M" stamped near the model number. If it hasn't been done and you want it done, just call S&W customer service and they will ship both ways for the work.

Congratulations on the new addition.

Thanks guys.  Bob, no it's not a DAO...it has a very light and crisp SA trigger pull.  Thanks for the heads-up on the recall, and no, it doesn't have the "M' marking.  I'm gonna have to think about that one.  I suppose I will, but I'd hate to ship it back already.  Can't say I've ever had a bad experience with shipping guns...but the thought still makes me cringe a bit.
It's been a while since I've owned a nice blued revolver, I had nearly forgotten how beautiful they are.
Stainless has it's virtues, but the old style blue finish is damned pleasing to the eye.

Dear Sir,

We hate you.  We hate you very much.

We hope you end up fondling that revolver until all the blue is worn off, and have to sell it as an ugly POS.  When that time comes, please contact us at 804-918-xxxx (collect, if you are really strapped for funds).  We will be glad to discuss a distress sale price with you.

stay safe.

PS - congrats on your purchase.  We still hate you.

Thanks....I think.  I think I'm finally getting to the point where I can actually enjoy having a pretty gun sit around (and shoot occasionally).  I've owned a few very nice blued S&W's and Colts in the past...but for whatever reason, I just didn't keep them very long, usually trading them for something I considered more useful (and always uglier).  I guess I have enough ugly guns now.

Well, at least you have recognized the problem and have started towards the corrective measures needed. =D Sadly, some people never do, if it is tacticool they don't care how ugly it is.  :|

I don't like tacticool, but I prefer ugly guns myself. The only pretty gun I want is a double barrel .500 Nitro Express.
