Calling gamers. PS3 versions differences
« on: November 11, 2009, 07:14:58 PM »
I'm considering gettting a PS/3.  It's one of the highest rated Blu-Ray players on the market, is BD 2.0 compatible, and (coming soon) is supposed to access movies-on-demand.  The gaming portion is just a bonus.  I haven't played anything on a home console since Missile Command on an Atari 2600 so it's so much gibberish to me.

I cain't say I nose nuthing bout thees here pee ess threes, so's I asks me some kweschuns.  Mainly has to do with the difference between the 160Gb and recently announced 250Gb versions.  What does the extra drive space actually do in terms of added performance, functionality, etc?  Is it worth the extra fifty bucks, or is it a sales gimmick with no real benefit other than in certain limited situations?

What say ye oh High Geeks of game playerdom?

I think the hard drive is used to store game info, movies, and music. So some people use it as a computer driven entertainment system. The value of the hard drive will depend on how you use it.
I’m not saying I invented the turtleneck. But I was the first person to realize its potential as a tactical garment. The tactical turtleneck! The… tactleneck!

Ah.  I forgot it also functions as a dandy MP3 player.  Bonus!

Brad,

If the PS3 is like the Xbox, you can load games to the hard drive instead of running them off the disk.

you can upgrade the harddrive, any 2.5 inch sata hd will work, the older one(i think 80gig and before) had more usb ports and could play ps1 and 2 games, the new one doesn't look as nice but won't show finger prints [popcorn] oh and it's smaller =) if your playing online a bluetooth headset is good, don't lose the usb cable(like me ), and buy your hdmi cable(if you need one) from monoprice they put them onsale once in awhile for 2-3 bucks each =D

P.S. hope this made some since, if not sbt i'll try again later

I highly recommend this bundle http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-160-GB-Uncharted-Fortune-3/dp/B001ELI4S4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1257993456&sr=1-3
Uncharted was a hoot to play.

The new models don't look as sexy as the original.
If you want to play PS1&PS2 games then you need to get the 80GB version.

The extra HDD space will be for movies, games both downloaded and off the discs, demos, music pictures etc.
However the media server function is awesome.
Although I suggest using PS3 Media Server instead of WMP's
On the PC side.
I have all my movies and tv shows on my server (pc in the office) and they are all accessible through the PS3.

You certainly want to use an HDMI cable to a decent LCD or Plasma screen.

Enjoy

Looks like it's a moot point.  The garage door opener ate itself for dinner tonight.  Looks like I get to go opener shopping with the fun money I was going to use for the PS/3.

Sigh...  =(
