It's here! It's here! (...and It's done! It's done!)
« on: November 13, 2009, 05:05:16 PM »
That loud humming sound you're hearing is my new machine being loaded with Win 7.  It arrived today!

For some reason I had to manually tell it to boot to the CD.  I suppose that some kind of idiot-proofing, but it was trying to force me to do the upgrade and not a clean install.

Once I did that and blew away the partitions, it was rock 'n roll time!  It's expanding files as we speak.  Heck, it even recognized both the new drives without me having to go into the BIOS and tell it to (one of our local "guru's" said that I might have to).

I'm also currently making a full backup of all my data, including e-mail and such.  Hopefully by this time tomorrow I'll be smoking down the information superhighway on a new and improved set of wheels!

...and the first post from the new machine.  YAY!!  =D

I'm waiting for the old machine to finish backing up.  Once that's done I'll move the drive to this machine, start the upload, and head home for a well-deserved beer.

Up and running at 99%.  I have one database I'll have to map fields for, but that's it.  Everything else is GREAT!  I can waste time surfing the net and talking to you yahoos far more efficiently now. =D

The thing I like about 7 the most, is the ever changing wallpapers.  Download the Australia set, they are neat.

I couldn't get the last piece of software to play nice so I'll have to manually enter the data, but that's been the only real hiccup.  I started around noon today and finished about 6:30.  That's actually a welcome surprise.  I was figuring at least two or three days to get everything functional.  It'll take a while to manually enter the info from the database that wouldn't play nice, but it's not immediately critical and I can do it over several days.

About the only true disappointment was losing my local printer.  I have an old LaserJet 5L that I use for small print jobs, leaving high-volume stuff to the big office Workcentre.  No dice on the new machine as it has no parallel port.  No prob, though.  I brought it home so I'll have a printer here.

Often parallel port printers can be made to work with these gadgets:

If you really get to missing your 5L at work, add-on PCI-to-parallel port cards are less than $20 at Newegg.

I've got my Windows 7 RC1 copy to install yet.  Maybe I'll do that today.
